BRUSSELS, 19-12-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Internal Policies and EU Institutions
“I warmly welcome today’s conclusion of the Association Agreement between the Republic of Georgia and the European Union. I would like to congratulate the people of Georgia on what is nothing less than a historic moment in the relationship between the EU and Georgia.
The conclusion of the agreement was supported by an overwhelming majority of the European Parliament and it constitutes the result of the efforts of the Georgian authorities within the framework of the Eastern Partnership.
The European Parliament is confident that this agreement will be a stepping stone to further reforms to create a democratic society characterised by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity, equality and human rights. It is now essential for Georgia to fully implement the agreement and to demonstrate its firm commitment to the shared values and principles of the European Union. Upholding the rule of law and pursing further reforms to the judiciary are of particular importance.
The European Parliament remains a dedicated partner and friend of the Republic of Georgia and looks forward to furthering the fruitful cooperation. ”
