Swissgrid’s Bodensee Study and Airolo to Baggio interconnector projects included in EC’s list of priority energy infrastructure projects

Frick, Switzerland, 25-10-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Commission has confirmed a list of cross-border infrastructure projects «of European interest» (Projects of Common Interest; PCI). The Bodensee Study and the Airolo to Baggio interconnector projects are included in the list.

This week the European Commission decided on a range of priority energy infrastructure projects, whose timely implementation is particularly important in achieving more security of supply, the integration of the European internal energy market and creating more competition. From the perspective of the EU member states, these projects will be able to benefit from accelerated approval processes, improved regulatory handling and from some financial support.

While it is currently not clear whether Swissgrid will receive financial support from a European funding pot for these projects, the inclusion of Switzerland can be interpreted as a politically positive signal. This is because the European Union has taken a great interest in Switzerland’s participation in the European internal energy market.

Swissgrid has been campaigning for the inclusion of Swiss projects in the European Union for more than 2 years, in order to create visibility for important cross-border development.
