OSLO, 3-2-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — A new three-minute video from Sapa provides a close-up view showing how aluminium solutions in lighting columns are making roadways safer.
Passively safe lighting columns, traffic signals and sign posts are becoming more commonplace on highways as well as on rural roads – and aluminium, with its energy-absorption qualities, is the preferred material.
Europe’s BS EN 12767 standard specifies performance requirements for passively safe support structures for permanent road equipment. It defines and limits the levels of occupant injury severity when impacting these structures.
In urban areas, where risk of secondary impact is high, lighting columns require a classification for high-energy absorption. The best classification for occupants is HE3.
In order to obtain HE3 classification, the solution must integrate a patented “catch-up” construction into the column. This reduces significantly the speed of the vehicle during impact, while guaranteeing maximum occupant safety.
The crash demonstration video produced by Sapa Pole Products shows the effectiveness of its HE3 columns.
