28-6-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — IBERDROLA has received the 2013 Award for Leadership in New Energy from the prestigious US publishing group Energy Intelligence in recognition of its contribution in the transition from fossil sources to new clean energy generation technologies.
As stated by Energy Intelligence when announcing the winner of said award, “IBERDROLA, headed by Chairman and CEO Ignacio Galán, is one of the largest European utilities and has led the way globally in moving toward low-carbon electricity generation”.
In the New Energy Top 100 Green Utilities ranking, compiled by Energy Intelligence at the end of 2012 and based on CO2 emissions and renewable energy capacity, IBERDROLA placed first, ahead of the Portuguese company EDP and the US company NextEra. The Company achieved the highest score, winning 265 points out of a possible 300.
“As the top ranking utility in our annual rankings, which includes the world’s top 100 electricity companies, IBERDROLA is a worthy recipient for the Award for Leadership in New Energy”, said David Pike, editor of Energy Intelligence New Energy.
This award was introduced last year, within the framework of the annual Oil & Money conference organised by Energy Intelligence. The winner of the first edition was the city of Masdar, in Abu Dhabi, whose electricity supply is 100% renewable.
Energy Intelligence is a publishing group based in New York and with over 60 years of history. Its leading publications include Petroleum Intelligence Weekly and Oil Daily. Energy Intelligence New Energy focuses on the area of renewable energy, the CO2emissions market and electricity transmission.
For over a decade, IBERDROLA has been a world leader in the development of sustainable energy and is the only electricity company included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since its introduction 13 years ago. It is also in the FTSE4Good and Global Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index.
Over the past decade, IBERDROLA has allocated some 25 billion euros to the development of economically sustainable renewables, the highest figure ever invested by a company in this field.
Such investment has allowed the Company to have over 200 wind farms throughout Spain and 330 worldwide and can now boast an installed capacity in excess of 14,000 megawatts (MW), making it a world leader within the sector.
Member of the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership
In early June, IBERDROLA joined the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP), whose members supply one third of all the world’s electricity.
The GSEP was founded in 1992, within the framework of the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro aimed at promoting the development of sustainable energy through electricity projects and training programmes in developing countries.
