Horsemeat in food products: Commissioner Malmström welcomes Europol’s lead role in investigations

Brussels, 15-2-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — The extent of the horsemeat case makes it clear that this needs to be addressed at European level. Today’s meeting between UK Environment Secretary, Owen Paterson, and Europol representatives is an important step in this direction and I welcome the cooperation that is now being established. Europol is already investigating the data submitted so far and is ready to assist even further. It is therefore crucial that all Member States involved submit the data necessary for Europol to conduct the appropriate analysis. Europol will provide its expertise and will coordinate the efforts put in place by many EU Member States. We must fight cross border crime through cross border cooperation. I welcome Europol´s readiness to quickly help determine responsibilities. I hope this leads to the identification of those who have committed crimes, misled consumers and undermined trust in the internal market.
