21-5-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — First year welding apprentice Kurt Rodgers is one step closer to reaching the final of SkillWeld 2013 after beating all-comers in the semi-final event held at Alstom Power in Stafford.
The competition aims to find Britain’s most talented trainee welder and was another big win for Alstom’s Welding Facility
As a winning semi-finalist, 19-year-old Kurt, from Conisbrough, Doncaster, stands a strong chance of being shortlisted to compete in the final stage of the competition at the NEC in Birmingham in November 2013. If his shortlisting is confirmed, he will be one of just ten welders from across the UK to compete at the final event. He is currently serving an apprenticeship at Alstom Power Service in Stafford.
Kurt, whose father is also a welder, said: “This has been a great experience so far and I’m really glad that Alstom suggested that I enter. The competition has been really tough so far and the skills needed to complete each of the set tasks have been very high indeed. I’m looking forward to the final.” Kurt was presented with a certificate and a new welding helmet by Paul Robson from event sponsor Air Products.
Jim Mcilwrath, Welding Engineering Manager for Alstom Power, said: “Kurt’s win is fantastic and is felt throughout the whole company. It’s extra special as Kurt is only a first year welding apprentice which shows his commitment, dedication and natural ability as a very skilled young welder. Kurt’s success is down to pure hard work which has paid off in this competition and hopefully will earn him a place at the finals later this year at the NEC.”
