31-7-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — The company will contribute €455,000 to improve this historic site Barcelona, 25 July 2013. abertis autopistas and Martorell Town Council have signed an agreement to finance work to manage and refurbish the castle at Sant Genís de Rocafort. The agreement will see abertis autopistas pay a total of €455,287 to carry out the project.
The rehabilitation work will involve preparing the access road to the Sant Genís de Rocafort monument complex, in order to facilitate visits from the general public, and also the reinforcement and restoration of the monument’s remains.
Participating at today’s signing ceremony, held at the Town Council’s head office, were Josep Lluís Giménez, General Manager of abertis autopistas, and the Mayor of Martorell Salvador Esteve.
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, the castle at Sant Genís de Rocafort is a Roman construction situated on the hills in Martorell. It was founded by Guillem II Bonfill, Lord of Castellví de Rosanes, in the old castle at Rocafort, in 1042. Remnants of the both the wall and the 12th century church remain today.
As a sign of its commitment to the regions in which it operates, abertis autopistas invests in culture and the restoration of heritage in partnership with local organisations and local councils. Recently, abertis autopistas and the abertis foundation announced a joint project to refurbish and manage the El Mèdol Roman quarry in Tarragona.
