Barcelona, 12-3-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — The abertis foundation and abertis autopistas, in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Family Affairs of the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Red Cross, the Guttman Institute, ONCE and the Ecom Federation, have today launched a new initiative called “Eliminem barreres” (Breaking Down Barriers) that involves providing free VIA-T devices to disabled drivers to make motorway use as easy as possible.
Disabled drivers that take part in this initiative are entitled to a free VIA-T device and other special benefits, such as significant reductions on maintenance fees.
VIA-T is an electronic toll system used on toll roads that pays the toll without the driver needing to stop. A special device fitted to the vehicle and an electronic reading machine at toll stations automatically opens and closes the security barrier. Drivers with a VIA-T device are also entitled to exclusive discount programmes.
This initiative, promoted by abertis autopistas and the abertis foundation, is the first of its kind in Catalonia and Spain. To begin with, the initiative will cover Catalonia.
To qualify for the scheme, disabled drivers need to hold a valid driving licence and a disability card issued by the Department of Social Welfare and Family Affairs. The degree of disability must be at least 33% and the driver must have reduced mobility. Applicants are asked to call the abertis autopistas customer services number. 902 200 320.
