BERNE, 10-May-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Swisscom’s next technology leap in the mobile network: speeds of more than 800 Mbit/s are possible with the right mobile phone in the Swisscom Shop in Zurich’s Füsslistrasse. Swisscom’s mobile network is currently a step ahead of the smartphones on the market today. As soon as they catch up, we will break the speed barrier of 1 Gbit/s. That is around seven times faster than three years ago. Swisscom is thus consolidating its role as a technology leader in Switzerland.
Swisscom has equipped its Swisscom Shop in Zurich’s Füsslistrasse with advanced technology: by combining the four LTE 800, 1800, 2100 and 2600 frequency bands via carrier aggregation it can offer these high speeds, which are also enhanced by 4×4 MiMo (multiple input, multiple output) and advanced 256-QAM modulation. This technology mix permits exceptionally high data transfer. Around 800 Mbit/s were measured in the live network with a Sony Xperia XZ Premium. This end device will be exclusively available from Swisscom as of 6 June 2017. Other smartphones that support similar high speeds will be on the market shortly. Thanks to 1 Gbit/s, all Swisscom subscribers will, in the future, benefit from more network capacity, which is essential for providing the best network experiences despite a steep rise in Internet usage. The use of video content with a HD smartphone display in particular enhances the appeal of video enjoyment now and in the future. The jump in technology also permits new virtual reality, gaming and real time communication applications.
Significant step towards 5G
Swisscom works closely with partner Ericsson on the continuous development of its mobile network. Swisscom already offers 40% of the Swiss population speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s; it is the only mobile provider in Switzerland offering speeds up to 450 Mbit/s to 15% of the population (maximum values under optimum conditions). This current advance doubles the maximum speed and Swisscom plans to upgrade further sites to 1 Gbit/s this year. Through high and sustained investment in the mobile network, Swisscom is able to offer its customers access to the best network. This continued development is another vital step towards 5G.
