ORLEN Advances Flagship Gas-Fired Power Project as Grudziądz Plant Delivers First Electricity

(IN BRIEF) ORLEN’s CCGT Grudziądz combined cycle gas turbine power plant has delivered its first electricity to Poland’s national grid, marking a key commissioning milestone. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply electricity to around one million households and strengthen Poland’s energy security. The milestone follows the first firing of the gas turbine and synchronisation of the generating unit with the national grid. The next stage will include performance testing, commissioning of the steam cycle and operation at full rated load before commercial operation begins. The project is part of ORLEN’s largest-ever investment programme in modern CCGT assets. ORLEN is also advancing CCGT projects in Ostrołęka, Gdańsk, Grudziądz II and at the Siekierki CHP Plant, with a strategic target of reaching around 4.3 GW of installed CCGT capacity under its ORLEN 2035 Strategy.

(PRESS RELEASE) PŁOCK, 15-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — CCGT Grudziądz, ORLEN’s new combined cycle gas turbine power plant, has delivered electricity to Poland’s national power grid for the first time, marking a major milestone in the commissioning of one of the group’s flagship energy projects.

Once fully operational, the plant will be capable of supplying electricity to around one million households, strengthening Poland’s energy security and supporting the stability of the national power system.

Ireneusz Fąfara, CEO and President of the Management Board of ORLEN, said the milestone demonstrates further progress under the company’s largest-ever capital investment programme.

“Following the first power export from the Baltic Power offshore wind farm, CCGT Grudziądz has now reached the same milestone, with electricity delivered to the national grid,” said Fąfara.

He added that the project is expected to reinforce Poland’s energy security and provide reliable electricity supplies to around one million households, while helping ORLEN expand its portfolio of modern generation assets.

The first firing of the gas turbine and synchronisation of the generating unit with the national grid are key steps in the commissioning of a combined cycle power plant. Their completion confirms that the plant’s critical process systems are ready for operation and allows the project to move into the next phase of commissioning.

During synchronisation, electricity generated by CCGT Grudziądz was exported to the grid for the first time, bringing the project closer to commercial operation.

The next phase will include a series of performance tests, including commissioning of the steam cycle and operation of the unit at full rated load. Successful completion of these tests will confirm whether the plant meets its design specifications.

The scale of the Grudziądz project reflects the complexity of ORLEN’s wider energy transition programme. At the peak of construction, nearly 1,000 people were working on site, contributing more than four million man-hours.

The project required more than 30,000 cubic metres of concrete, 4,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 6,500 tonnes of structural steel. The construction also involved the installation of 500 tonnes of piping and almost 900 kilometres of cables to support the safe and reliable operation of the plant’s core systems.

CCGT Grudziądz is part of ORLEN Group’s largest-ever investment programme focused on modern combined cycle gas turbine assets. These plants are intended to provide flexible generation capacity and support the stability of Poland’s power system during the energy transition.

Alongside the CCGT projects in Grudziądz and Ostrołęka, both of which are in the final stages of commissioning, ORLEN is advancing additional investments. Construction of a new CCGT unit is under way in Gdańsk, work has started on the CCGT Grudziądz II project, and preparations continue at the Siekierki CHP Plant to select gas technology and an EPC contractor.

Under the ORLEN 2035 Strategy, the group aims to increase its installed CCGT capacity to approximately 4.3 GW. ORLEN said this would create one of the region’s largest portfolios of advanced, low-carbon gas-fired generation assets.

As the remaining commissioning milestones are completed, CCGT Grudziądz is moving towards the planned start of commercial operation later this year.
