Indra Group Demonstrates How AI Can Support Threat Anticipation and Decision-Making in Military Operations

(IN BRIEF) Indra Group has demonstrated through the European Defence Fund-backed FaRADAI project how artificial intelligence can support military operations by interpreting complex ground-based imagery, identifying vehicles, personnel and infrastructure, assessing threats and dynamically recalculating safe routes when unforeseen situations arise. The project, formally titled Frugal and Robust AI for Defence Advanced Intelligence, brings together 38 partners from 13 European countries and is coordinated by the Hellenic Centre for Research and Technology (CERTH). Indra Group led key use cases focused on sensor resilience, decision-making under uncertainty and human-machine collaboration, applying a human-in-the-loop approach in which AI supports human decision-making while preserving oversight, transparency and operational confidence. (PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 19-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Indra Group has demonstrated how artificial intelligence can help anticipate threats, interpret complex operational environments and improve decision-making in military operations through the European R&D&I project FaRADAI, short for Frugal and Robust AI for Defence Advanced Intelligence.

The project, funded by the European Defence Fund, focuses on the development of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities that are frugal, robust and explainable for defence applications.

In this context, frugal AI refers to systems capable of operating with limited resources, while robust and explainable AI supports resilience, transparency and confidence in critical operational settings.

Launched in 2022, the FaRADAI consortium brings together 38 partners from 13 European countries.

The initiative is coordinated by the Hellenic Centre for Research and Technology, known as CERTH, and includes leading European technology institutions, among them Indra Group.

Representatives from the Ministries of Defence of EU member states, together with the European Commission’s Project Officer, gathered in Thessaloniki, Greece, to review the project’s findings.

The initiative addresses key defence-sector challenges including decision-making under uncertainty, system resilience and human-machine collaboration.

As part of FaRADAI, Indra Group led the development of critical use cases designed to demonstrate the potential of AI in highly complex military operations.

One of the use cases tested the robustness and resilience of sensors under misleading conditions.

The work significantly improved the ability of systems to interpret complex scenes from ground-based imagery, identify relevant elements such as vehicles, personnel and infrastructure, and analyse relationships between objects to assess potential threats.

The solution also includes capabilities for the dynamic generation of safe routes when unforeseen situations arise.

This supports real-time decision-making in operational environments where conditions may change quickly.

Indra Group said the capabilities developed through the project incorporate its human-in-the-loop approach.

Under this model, artificial intelligence acts as an enabler of human decision-making rather than a replacement for it.

The approach is designed to increase confidence, transparency and security in critical operations while maintaining human oversight.
