Novonesis Report Highlights JPY 4.748 Trillion Biosolutions Opportunity for Japan by 2035

Novonesis Report Highlights JPY 4.748 Trillion Biosolutions Opportunity for Japan by 2035

(IN BRIEF) A new Novonesis-commissioned report, “The Value of Biosolutions: Growth and Prosperity to 2035 – Japan Edition,” finds that biosolutions could help Japan strengthen its position as a global biomanufacturing hub and support its ambition to realise one of the world’s most advanced bioeconomies by 2030. The report estimates that Japan’s biosolutions industry could triple in value to JPY 4.748 trillion by 2035, while each job created in the sector could generate 2.1 additional jobs across the wider economy. It highlights the role of biosolutions in supporting economic growth, food and supply security, energy resilience, resource efficiency and more sustainable food and industrial systems. However, the report also warns that Japan will need enabling policies, faster regulatory approvals, clearer market access, stronger biofuel mandates, financial incentives, scalable manufacturing pathways and greater public awareness to fully unlock the sector’s potential.

(PRESS RELEASE) TOKYO, Japan, 18-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — A new report commissioned by Novonesis finds that biosolutions could play a major role in strengthening Japan’s position as a global biomanufacturing hub and supporting the country’s ambition to realise one of the world’s most advanced bioeconomies by 2030.

The report, titled “The Value of Biosolutions: Growth and Prosperity to 2035 – Japan Edition,” quantifies the economic potential of the biosolutions sector in Japan and globally.

It highlights how biosolutions can contribute to economic growth, food and supply security, and energy resilience.

The report also states that realising this potential will require enabling policy frameworks, faster regulatory approvals and stronger support for innovation and market access.

The report was launched during a Japanese delegation’s visit to Novonesis’ headquarters in Lyngby, Denmark, as part of discussions on biosolutions, including food enzyme market access and bioenergy policy advocacy.

According to the findings, the value of the biosolutions industry in Japan could triple to reach JPY 4.748 trillion by 2035.

The report states that achieving this growth will depend on policy conditions that support innovation, commercialisation and wider adoption of bio-based solutions.

It also finds that each job created in Japan’s biosolutions sector generates 2.1 additional jobs across other sectors of the Japanese economy.

This is below the global average of 2.4, suggesting that Japan has further scope to expand the wider economic impact of biosolutions.

Biosolutions are already used across more than 30 industries globally, including food, agriculture, energy, industrial manufacturing and biofuels.

They are increasingly recognised as drivers of sustainable and competitive economic transformation.

Hirokazu Sano, Representative Director and President at Novonesis Japan Ltd., said Japan’s ambition to realise the world’s most advanced bioeconomy society will require greater adoption of bio-based inputs and more diverse resource streams.

He said biosolutions can play a central role in this transition by improving resource efficiency, strengthening energy resilience and supporting more sustainable food and industrial systems.

Sano added that regulatory delays, underdeveloped biofuel mandates and misaligned approval timelines represent missed opportunities to unlock the potential of biosolutions across Japan’s strategic sectors.

Policy recommendations for enabling growth

The report sets out several policy recommendations intended to help Japan unlock the full potential of biosolutions.

It calls for continued policy leadership through Japan’s Bioeconomy Strategy and its Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology Growth Strategy.

It also recommends financial incentives to accelerate Japan’s bioeconomy through an integrated network.

The report identifies the need for a fast-track regulatory pathway specifically designed for biosolutions.

It also highlights the importance of manufacturing processes that support expansion to commercial scale.

In addition, the report calls for an integrated mindset and strategy that sharpens the selection and concentration of technological advantages.

It also recommends raising public awareness and strengthening social acceptance by communicating the value of innovation and the potential of biosolutions.

What are biosolutions?

Biosolutions are biological solutions based on microbes, enzymes and other proteins, which are the building blocks of living systems.

Using modern science and technology, these microscopic tools can help businesses reduce waste, save energy and water, lower dependence on fossil resources and develop innovative and profitable products.

Biosolutions are already used across more than 30 industries, including preventive health, industrial applications, agriculture and food production.

Through the Japan Edition of “The Value of Biosolutions,” Novonesis is highlighting the role that biosolutions could play in Japan’s bioeconomy ambitions, while underlining the need for policy alignment, faster approvals and stronger market conditions to turn scientific potential into industrial and economic growth.
