Gdańsk Refinery Gains Direct Marine Handling Capacity Through ORLEN Terminal Investment

(IN BRIEF) ORLEN has opened a new Marine Transshipment Terminal at its Gdańsk refinery on the Martwa Wisła River, completing a major logistics investment designed to improve fuel supply efficiency and operational independence. The terminal enables direct transfer of refinery products and feedstocks between the refinery and tankers, reducing the need for intermediate transport and lowering reliance on road, rail and external port facilities. The facility includes a 380-metre quay, two berths and automated bidirectional loading arms, with capacity to handle more than 1.8 million tonnes of cargo annually and a potential ultimate throughput of 1.8–2 million tonnes. In its first year, the terminal is expected to handle around 100 vessels and approximately 500,000 tonnes of products, including marine gas oil, base oils, xylene, FAME, UCOME, ethanol, MTBE and ETBE.

(PRESS RELEASE) PŁOCK, 6-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ORLEN has opened a new Marine Transshipment Terminal at its Gdańsk refinery, completing one of the Group’s key logistics investments and strengthening the efficiency and security of Poland’s fuel supply chain.

The terminal, located on the Martwa Wisła River in Gdańsk, enables refinery products and feedstocks to be transferred directly between the refinery and tankers.

By eliminating the need for intermediate transport, the facility will shorten logistics routes, improve operational flexibility and reduce reliance on road and rail transport.

The terminal has been designed to handle more than 1.8 million tonnes of cargo annually.

It has already received its first vessels, which loaded marine gas oil, known as MGO, from the refinery and delivered FAME for use in biofuel production.

ORLEN said the project also has a strong domestic dimension, as it was delivered largely by Polish companies.

Ireneusz Fąfara, President of the ORLEN Management Board, said the Marine Transshipment Terminal on the Martwa Wisła River is a strategically important project that will improve the security and efficiency of fuel logistics in Poland.

He said the facility shortens the supply chain, increases the operational flexibility of the Gdańsk refinery and strengthens ORLEN’s operational independence.

Fąfara added that ORLEN is particularly pleased that Polish companies played a leading role in delivering such an advanced facility.

He said the project demonstrates that Polish businesses are capable of carrying out strategically important investments to high technological and organisational standards.

The new terminal includes a 380-metre quay with two identical berths, allowing two vessels to be handled at the same time.

Each berth can accommodate a vessel of up to 10,000 dwt, with a maximum length of 130 metres, beam of 17.6 metres and draught of 5.8 metres.

The berths are fitted with four automated, bidirectional marine loading arms operating at 10 bar.

The system has a transfer capacity of up to 500 cubic metres per hour.

The terminal will support exports of Group I and Group II base oils, which are used in applications including the production of engine oils and hydraulic oils.

It will also handle exports of low-sulphur marine gas oil for vessels’ main engines and auxiliary machinery, as well as xylene, a solvent used in the chemical industry.

On the import side, the terminal will handle FAME and UCOME for use in biofuel production.

It will also receive ethanol, used as an environmentally friendly petrol blending component, together with MTBE and ETBE, additives used to increase the octane rating of petrol.

In its first year of operation, ORLEN expects the Marine Transshipment Terminal in Gdańsk to handle around 100 vessels and approximately 500,000 tonnes of products.

The facility is expected to reduce logistics costs, increase supply flexibility and lower dependence on external port infrastructure in Gdańsk and Gdynia.

Its ultimate annual throughput capacity could reach approximately 1.8 million to 2 million tonnes of products.

The project cost nearly PLN 500 million.

Through the opening of the Marine Transshipment Terminal, ORLEN is strengthening the logistics base of its Gdańsk refinery, improving direct access to marine transport and supporting more resilient handling of fuels, biofuel components and chemical feedstocks.
