Lidl Italia selects the emission-free Scania Battery-Electric truck for delivery across its supermarkets in the north-east of Italy

(PRESS RELEASE)SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden, 21-Oct-2021 — /EuropaWire/ — Scania, a leading Swedish supplier of sustainable transport solutions and services, engines for industrial and marine applications, and power generation, has announced that Lidl Italia, Italy’s leading supermarket chain, has chosen to use the company’s innovative, emission-free Battery-Electric Vehicle, Lidl Italia’s first electric truck, for supplies to its supermarkets across the north-east of Italy. The battery-powered electric truck will operate from the Lidl logistics centre in Arcole near Verona and is a milestone for the company, which is one of the country’s pioneers of the transition to a sustainable transport system, and is the result of a far-sighted cooperation with Scania’s Italian subsidiary Italscania and transport company LC3 Trasporti.

The new Scania Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV) has a range of about 250km per charge, and is also equipped with a refrigerated box of 23 europallets that are refrigerated with liquid nitrogen provided by Lidl’s haulage partner, LC3 Trasporti.

The europallets completely reduce CO2, fine dust and NOX emissions, and also help to eliminate noise pollution from the engine. The BEV vehicle’s three-axle chassis has an electric engine with a continuous power of 230 kW (313 HP) and 295 kW (401 HP) peak power, while the refrigerated box provides two distinct areas for the transport of goods at different storage temperatures.

A pioneering journey to decarbonising transport

“Our long-term goal is the decarbonisation of transport, and the launch of this new battery-electric industrial vehicle is an important step forward in this direction,” says Luca Ros, Logistics Director of Lidl Italy.

Lidl’s choice was made possible thanks to the technologies developed by Scania, which is leading the way in the production of sustainable transport.

Enrique Enrich, President and CEO of Italscania, says: “We at Scania support them in this unprecedented transition, not only as vehicle suppliers, but also in the crucial activities of analysing operational dynamics, defining the charging infrastructure and, of course, with our services and our widespread network throughout the region.”

The President of the LC3 Trasporti Group, Michele Ambrogi, adds:

“In the first half of 2021 alone, our commitment to sustainable and environmentally-friendly freight transport, saw LC3 Trasporti vehicles travel millions of kilometres using alternative and renewable energy resources, such as Bio-CNG and Bio-LNG, which significantly reduced our emissions.

“Today, we’re continuing to live up to our commitment by embarking on a new and clean journey into the future aboard the first 100% electric Scania truck. We’re extremely proud to be able to be involved in this innovative project with a market leader like Lidl Italia.”

LIDL ITALIA
Lidl Italia is a supermarket chain that started in Italy in 1992. The company currently has a network of over 680 supermarkets, which are supplied on a daily basis by 10 logistics centres located throughout the country, and Lidl Italia employs more than 18,500 people.

LC3 TRASPORTI
LC3 Trasporti has been operating in the road transport sector since 2009, and today has a fleet of more than 200 vehicles, 65% of which can be powered by 100% sustainable propulsion. This is the synthesis of INBLUE, the company’s ongoing project which was started in 2016 and aims to completely reduce the CO2 emissions.

Since 2019, LC3 has introduced nitrogen refrigeration onto the Italian market, a zero-emission and 100% sustainable system that immediately puts a fleet of 20 cryogenic semi-trailers on the road. LC3 specialises in temperature-controlled and container transport to and from Italian ports. It can rely on tracking systems for vehicles and goods transported in Italy and abroad. In 2017, LC3 received the ‘President of the Republic Medal’ award in recognition of its sustainable vision for and commitment to green freight transport.
