(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 20-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Prudential HCL Health Insurance Limited, operating as Prudential Health India, has commenced operations, marking Prudential plc’s entry into India’s fast-growing standalone health insurance market.

The company is a 70:30 joint venture between Prudential plc and the HCL Group, with Prudential holding the majority stake and HCL Group holding 30 percent.

Prudential Health India aims to make health insurance simpler to understand, easier to buy and more convenient to use for Indian families.

The company is entering a market where gross written health insurance premiums are estimated at approximately USD 16 billion in FY 2026, according to the General Insurance Council of India.

Prudential Health India received its Certificate of Registration from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India on 1 July 2026, enabling the company to begin operations.

Expanding Prudential’s presence in India

Prudential plc, a major insurance group in Asia and Africa, said the launch deepens its presence in India at a time when rising disposable incomes, favourable demographics and greater awareness of health and protection are reshaping the insurance market.

The move also supports Prudential’s broader health strategy, which focuses on expanding access to healthcare and providing customers with greater peace of mind across Asia and Africa.

As one of Asia’s largest health insurers, Prudential brings experience in health insurance design and in supporting customers when they need medical treatment.

In May, Prudential announced that it was seeking to acquire a 75 percent stake in Bharti Life, in addition to its long-standing joint venture operations in life insurance and asset management.

Digital-first and service-led model

Prudential Health India will offer customers access to a network of more than 12,000 hospitals.

Its omnichannel model combines personal advice through an agency network with the convenience of an AI-enabled direct-to-consumer platform.

The company said its digital tools and services are designed around customer needs, making it easier for people to select cover, manage policies and receive support when they need it most.

Naveen Tahilyani, Regional CEO for Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, India and Africa, and Group Agency and Health at Prudential plc, said India is a strategically important market for Prudential.

He cited the country’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals, rising demand for healthcare and significant scope for innovation in customer experience.

Tahilyani said Prudential Health India is being built as a differentiated health insurance business focused on providing a simpler, more accessible and seamless customer experience.

He added that by combining Prudential’s insurance and health capabilities with HCL Group’s technology and healthcare expertise, the company aims to help more Indian families navigate their healthcare journey with confidence.

Amit Dave, MD and CEO Designate of Prudential Health India, said the company is committed to building insurance solutions that protect people against unforeseen health risks and ensure they are not alone during critical health moments.

He said the company’s focus is to go beyond the traditional role of an insurer and support customers at every stage of their health journey.

Dave added that Prudential Health India aims to combine intelligent, proactive support with suitable solutions before, during and after a health issue, helping make healthcare more accessible, seamless and reassuring.

He said the company remains committed to supporting the Indian government’s vision of “Insurance for All by 2047.”

Shikhar Malhotra, Executive Director of Vama Sundari Investments (Delhi) Private Ltd, said HCL’s entry into health insurance is a natural extension of its capabilities in healthcare technology, digital transformation and innovation.

He said healthcare is becoming increasingly consumer-led and technology-enabled, creating an opportunity to apply HCL’s strengths to an area central to the health and financial security of millions of Indians.

Malhotra said the partnership brings together Prudential’s expertise in protection and insurance with HCL’s capabilities in technology, digital transformation and healthcare.

He added that the venture reflects a shared ambition to help shape the next generation of health insurance by building a more customer-centric, technology-enabled and inclusive ecosystem.

Through the launch of Prudential Health India, Prudential plc and HCL Group are entering India’s expanding health insurance sector with a standalone insurer focused on digital access, personal advice and customer support across the healthcare journey.
