Gasum Delivers LNG to MSC Euribia and VOX Ariane in Hamburg Port

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has achieved its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations in the port of Hamburg, Germany. The company successfully delivered LNG to two vessels: the MSC Euribia, a highly energy-efficient flagship belonging to MSC Cruises, and the VOX Ariane, a state-of-the-art hopper dredger operated by Van Oord. These bunkering operations demonstrate Gasum’s commitment to providing sustainable marine fuel solutions, reducing emissions, and promoting environmentally friendly alternatives in the maritime industry. The operations were executed smoothly with collaboration between ship crews, port authorities, pilots, and agents, reinforcing Gasum’s leadership in cleaner energy solutions for the maritime sector.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 30-Oct-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a Nordic gas sector and energy market expert and a leader in providing natural gas and LNG (liquefied natural gas) solutions, has marked a significant milestone by completing its first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations at the port of Hamburg in Germany. The successful bunkering operations took place on October 24 and 25, 2023, and exemplify Gasum’s commitment to sustainable marine fuel solutions.

“LNG is an important step forward in our ambition to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It is a fuel in transition and poised to make way for carbon-neutral bio-LNG and eventually synthetic LNG that we look forward to using as and when they become available at scale as part of our longer-term decarbonisation journey”, Linden Coppell, Vice President of Sustainability & ESG MSC Cruises said.

In the first operation on October 24, LNG was delivered to the MSC Euribia, a flagship vessel belonging to MSC Cruises. This remarkable vessel, which was christened in June 2023, is renowned for its exceptional energy efficiency within the maritime industry. By utilizing LNG as its primary fuel source, the MSC Euribia can significantly reduce emissions compared to traditional maritime fuels. Furthermore, during its winter season at the Hamburg port in 2023–2024, the MSC Euribia plans to employ a shore power facility to further minimize emissions, exemplifying its dedication to environmental sustainability.

On October 25, the second bunkering operation involved supplying LNG to the state-of-the-art hopper dredger VOX Ariane, operated by Van Oord. This vessel plays a vital role in collecting and transporting sand, clay, and gravel from sea or riverbeds for essential operations, including coastal protection, port construction, deepening waterways, and land reclamation.

Gasum’s Maritime Sales Team, in collaboration with the experienced crew of the bunkering vessel Coralius, ensured that both bunkering operations were executed seamlessly. The cooperation between the ship crews, port authorities, pilots, and agents contributed to the overall success of these bunkering activities.

Gasum remains committed to fostering sustainable marine transport by providing cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel alternatives to support the maritime industry’s transition toward greener operations.

“Gasum is happy to support two such great vessels and companies in their goals to reduce emissions from their operations by providing cleaner energy for them. We would like to extend our thanks to everyone involved in making these first ship-to-ship bunkerings in Hamburg a success”, Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum stated.
