Biogas Revolution: Gasum’s Keminmaa Station Offers Low-Emission Fueling Options

Biogas Revolution: Gasum’s Keminmaa Station Offers Low-Emission Fueling Options

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has expanded its gas filling station network by opening a new station in Keminmaa, Finland. This station is a significant milestone as it is the first gas filling station in Finnish Lapland, Gasum’s second northernmost station, and Europe’s northernmost liquefied biogas (LBG) filling station. It serves both heavy-duty transport and passenger cars by offering refueling options for liquefied and compressed biogas. The Pohjaset Group, a local business focused on sustainability, has acquired the first gas truck for its fleet, reflecting the growing interest in low-emission fuels. Biogas is recognized as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative, with emissions 90 percent lower than traditional fossil fuels. Gasum aims to introduce 7 terawatt hours of renewable gas to the market annually by 2027, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.8 million tons. The Keminmaa station received funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, supporting its expansion and promoting sustainable transport solutions in the region.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 30-Oct-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a Nordic gas sector and energy market expert and a pioneer in clean energy solutions, has taken another significant step in promoting low-emission transport by inaugurating its latest gas filling station in Keminmaa, Finland. This new station marks several important milestones, including being the first gas filling station in Finnish Lapland, Gasum’s second northernmost station, and Europe’s northernmost liquefied biogas (LBG) filling station.

Located at Rajakankaantie 1 in the Rajakangas industrial park, the Keminmaa station serves both heavy-duty transport and passenger cars by offering refueling options for liquefied and compressed biogas.

“The station is well placed to serve traffic in Finland heading for Rovaniemi and Tornio and further on towards Sweden. Gasum aims to further improve the availability of biogas in Northern Finland in the near future – demand is constantly growing, and we’ve received many requests for new stations in Lapland. Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to announce some new projects in the region,” says Juho Kurra, Head of Business, Traffic Finland at Gasum.

The Pohjaset Group, a prominent family-owned business with operations in the Kemi-Tornio area, including logistics and recycling services, was quick to embrace this sustainable energy solution. With a mission to promote sustainability and the circular economy, the Pohjaset Group recognized the benefits of low-emission fuels and has acquired its first gas truck for the vehicle fleet, set to hit the road in early 2024. As the gas filling station network expands in Northern Finland, the company plans to add more gas vehicles to its fleet.

“The Keminmaa filling station means that we can use biogas and offer low-emission transportation to our customers since now that the station is open, we will be able to run on biogas throughout almost our entire operating area. We firmly believe that the number of gas vehicles in general will increase in Northern Finland in the next few years,” says Petri Pohjanen, Logistics Services BU manager.

Biogas emerges as a compelling choice for reducing emissions, with its lifecycle emissions averaging 90 percent lower than traditional fossil fuels. It is a cost-effective option for heavy-duty transport companies looking to significantly cut emissions in their operations.

Gasum is at the forefront of the transition to renewable energy sources, with nearly 100 percent of the gas sold as a transport fuel consisting of biogas. The company’s strategic goal is to introduce 7 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable gas to the market annually by 2027. Achieving this goal would result in an annual reduction of 1.8 million tons in carbon dioxide emissions for Gasum’s customers.

The Keminmaa gas filling station received funding from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, further supporting the expansion of sustainable transport solutions in the region.
