Azane Fuel Solutions Receives 5.4 Million EUR Investment for Ammonia Bunkering Units

(IN BRIEF) Yara Growth Ventures and Navigator Holdings have invested 5.4 million EUR in Azane Fuel Solutions, a Norwegian ammonia bunkering startup. Azane aims to construct the world’s first ammonia bunkering network, starting with its first bunkering unit in Norway, with Yara Clean Ammonia as a partner. The bunkering units are set to commence operations in Scandinavia by 2025. This initiative is a significant step toward adopting zero-carbon fuels in maritime transportation, addressing the industry’s 3% share of global emissions. Azane expects to expand internationally and broaden its range of ammonia fuel handling technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) OSLO, 25-Oct-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Yara International ASA, a global firm specializing in agricultural products and environmental protection agents and a leading global ammonia player, announces that its venture investment branch, Yara Growth Ventures AS and Navigator Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: NVGS), have jointly invested 5.4 million EUR (approximately 5.7 million USD) in Azane Fuel Solutions AS, a pioneering Norwegian ammonia bunkering startup. This significant investment marks a crucial step toward the construction of the world’s first ammonia bunkering units.

Azane Fuel Solutions AS, established in Norway in 2020 as a joint venture between ECONNECT Energy AS and Amon Maritime AS, specializes in developing proprietary technology and services for ammonia fuel handling. Their mission is to facilitate the transition to green fuels in the maritime industry.

Subject to standard conditions, Azane plans to establish the world’s first ammonia bunkering network, with Yara Clean Ammonia as one of its partners. The investment from Yara and Navigator will enable Azane to initiate the construction of its inaugural bunkering unit for ammonia supply in Norway. This development is a significant step toward kickstarting the adoption of zero-carbon fuels in maritime transportation. Azane also envisions international expansion and broadening its range of ammonia fuel handling technologies as a means of future value creation.

Operations of the bunkering units are expected to commence in Scandinavia by 2025. The potential market for ammonia-powered ships is vast, encompassing the entire deep-sea shipping fleet of approximately 100,000 vessels worldwide. Over time, this industry is anticipated to transition to zero-carbon fuels, a crucial step in reducing the approximately 3% of global emissions currently generated by ocean shipping.

Azane enjoys a strategic partnership with Yara Clean Ammonia, which plans to supply clean ammonia for storage in Azane’s bunkering units once they become operational.

Stian Nygaard, Investment Director, Yara Growth Ventures, commented:

“Currently ammonia fuel bunkering does not exist. With this investment it is expected to become a reality in a year, starting in Scandinavia. This is anticipated to be a huge milestone for reducing emissions from the shipping industry. By enabling Azane to be the first mover on providing this key part of the infrastructure, our goal is to fill a gap in the ammonia chain needed for fueling ships.”

Stian Nygaard is also joining the board to help build the company as a strategic investor.

Mads Peter Zacho, Chief Executive Officer, Navigator, stated:

“Green ammonia is crucial to the future success of carbon free shipping, and Azane is working to provide a solution to a clear and important gap in the ammonia fuel value chain. Global ammonia demand is expected to triple by 2050, with a significant part being for ship fuel.”

“In an increasingly strong regulatory environment towards greener fuels in the shipping industry, I am very pleased Navigator is not only making efforts to become a more sustainable business itself, but also investing in scale-ups that we believe can support and expedite the transition across our industry. We look forward to strengthening our working relationships with Yara and Azane through this partnership.”

André Risholm, Chairman, Azane, commented:

“It will be a great strength for our company to partner with two of the leading ammonia players in the world, one from industry and another one from gas shipping, both entering as strategic investors and joining the board to help build the company. The fresh funds will help accelerate the company’s growth ambitions in Scandinavia and internationally. As a first mover, Azane’s bunkering solutions will enable ship owners across the world to make the transition to carbon free shipping by showcasing full scale commercial bunkering projects.”
