Stora Enso’s Beihai Mill Enters Second Decade Focused on Efficiency, Renewable Materials and Fibre-Based Packaging

(IN BRIEF) Stora Enso’s Beihai Mill in Guangxi, China, is celebrating 10 years of operations since its launch on 26 May 2016. With accumulated investment of approximately EUR 1.2 billion, the mill is one of Stora Enso’s largest investments outside Europe and the largest single Nordic industrial investment in China. Over the past decade, the site has become an important production base for renewable packaging materials, with annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes of food-grade packaging board, 240,000 tonnes of bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp and 80,000 tonnes of polyethylene-coated board. Its products serve sectors including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and children’s books. During its first decade, the mill supplied around 4.5 million tonnes of renewable packaging materials while maintaining a focus on safety, quality, efficiency and sustainable development. As it enters its second decade, Beihai Mill will continue to support Stora Enso’s strategy in renewable materials and consumer packaging, while strengthening operational performance and developing fibre-based packaging solutions with customers, partners and local communities.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 2-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Stora Enso’s Beihai Mill in Guangxi, China, has reached its 10-year operational milestone, marking a decade of industrial development, renewable packaging production and continued investment in safety, quality, efficiency and sustainable growth. Since beginning operations on 26 May 2016, the mill has become one of Stora Enso’s most significant investments outside Europe and an important manufacturing base within the company’s global packaging business.

With accumulated investment of approximately EUR 1.2 billion, or RMB 9.6 billion, Beihai Mill stands as Stora Enso’s largest investment beyond Europe and the largest single Nordic industrial investment in China. The site has also played a meaningful role in supporting the economic and industrial development of the Beibu Gulf region, strengthening Guangxi’s position as a hub for advanced packaging and materials production.

Over the past decade, Beihai Mill has grown into an integrated production platform with annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes of food-grade packaging board, 240,000 tonnes of bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp and 80,000 tonnes of polyethylene-coated board. Its products are used across a broad range of applications, including food and beverage packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, cosmetics packaging and children’s books.

The mill’s development reflects Stora Enso’s wider focus on renewable materials and fibre-based packaging solutions. During its first 10 years, Beihai Mill has supplied around 4.5 million tonnes of renewable packaging materials, helping customers access safe, reliable and high-quality solutions while supporting the broader shift toward more sustainable packaging alternatives.

Markku Luoto, Head of Foodservice and Liquid Board Business Area at Stora Enso, said the Beihai team has shown strong operational capability through consistent execution and continuous improvement. He noted that as Stora Enso continues to focus on renewable materials and consumer packaging, Beihai Mill will remain an important part of the company’s strategy.

Since its launch, the mill has steadily advanced its operating practices and capabilities, with safety, product quality, efficiency and sustainable development remaining central priorities. Its performance over the past decade has been shaped by ongoing process improvements, customer collaboration and a commitment to building long-term partnerships.

Zhigang Fu, Beihai Mill Director, said the site has worked consistently to deliver reliable products and strengthen customer confidence through safety, quality, operational efficiency and sustainable development. Looking ahead, he said the mill will continue to move forward with determination as it enters its next phase of growth.

As Beihai Mill begins its second decade, Stora Enso plans to continue strengthening operational efficiency, advancing sustainability practices and developing innovative fibre-based packaging solutions together with customers, partners and local communities.
