Metso Strengthens Aggregates Production Platform With Next Phase of Tampere Technology Center Investment

(IN BRIEF) Metso has decided to proceed with the second phase of its Lokomotion technology center in Lahdesjärvi, Tampere, with an investment of approximately EUR 60 million over three years. This phase will include the construction of a new crusher factory, with groundwork beginning in June 2026 and production expected to start in autumn 2028. The second phase will add around 12,000 square metres to the technology center, which will eventually cover approximately 66,000 square metres and serve as a modern, resource-efficient hub for designing, testing and manufacturing technologies, equipment and components for aggregates and sand production. The first phase, launched in June 2024, is progressing on schedule and is due for completion in August 2027, with Lokotrack® production expected to begin in Lahdesjärvi in the third quarter of 2027. The overall Lokomotion investment exceeds EUR 200 million and represents the largest industrial investment in Tampere this century. Metso will gradually relocate its aggregates business operations from the current Lokomo site in Hatanpää to the new technology center, after which it plans to divest the Hatanpää property.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 2-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Metso is moving ahead with the second phase of its Lokomotion technology center in Lahdesjärvi, Tampere, with an investment of approximately EUR 60 million over three years. The new phase will add a dedicated crusher factory to the site, further expanding what is planned to become a modern production, testing and technology hub for aggregates and sand production solutions.

The second-phase investment will support the continued development of the Lahdesjärvi technology center, where Metso will design, test and manufacture technologies, equipment and components used in aggregates production. The investment for 2026 is estimated at approximately EUR 15 million, with the broader second-phase spending spread across a three-year period.

Once completed, the Lokomotion technology center will bring together advanced manufacturing, testing, assembly and logistics capabilities in a more resource-efficient operating environment. The site is expected to be fully completed in the early 2030s and will gradually replace Metso’s current Lokomo aggregates business site in Hatanpää, Tampere.

Markku Simula, President of Metso’s Aggregates business area, said the start of the second phase strengthens the overall Lahdesjärvi technology center and creates the basis for launching crusher production in a new, modern facility. He noted that the overall investment exceeds EUR 200 million and is expected to improve Metso’s global delivery capability while supporting the company’s position as a market leader in aggregates solutions.

Simula also highlighted Metso’s long-standing industrial presence in Tampere, describing the Lokomotion technology center as the largest industrial investment in the city during this century. He said the project will contribute to the development of the regional industrial ecosystem, while supporting skills, employment and sustainable industrial growth.

Construction of the second phase is scheduled to begin with groundwork in June 2026. The new crusher factory is expected to start production in autumn 2028. The works will advance alongside the first phase of the project, allowing the technology center to be commissioned gradually.

The full technology center will have a total building area of approximately 66,000 square metres. The second phase will account for around 12,000 square metres, expanding the assembly and logistics facilities already under construction as part of the first phase.

The first phase of the Lokomotion project began in June 2024 and remains on schedule for completion in August 2027. It includes assembly and testing facilities for mobile crushers, as well as warehouse space. Interior building services and structural engineering work are currently underway at the site.

Production of Lokotrack® track-mounted crushing and screening equipment is planned to begin at the new Lahdesjärvi factory during the third quarter of 2027. The first-phase investment totals approximately EUR 150 million, of which around EUR 70 million had been spent by the end of April 2026.

As the new technology center becomes operational, Metso will gradually relocate its aggregates business activities from the current Lokomo site in Hatanpää to Lahdesjärvi. After the relocation, the company plans to divest the Hatanpää site and the buildings it owns there.

Through the Lokomotion project, Metso is consolidating key production and technology functions in Tampere while strengthening its long-term manufacturing platform for aggregates solutions, mobile crushers and related equipment.
