(IN BRIEF) Sweco has agreed to acquire Platom, a Finnish nuclear consultancy with more than 25 years of experience and around 30 specialists. The acquisition will make Sweco the leading nuclear consultancy in Finland and strengthen its European capabilities in a sector seeing renewed momentum as part of the energy transition. Platom provides technical consulting across the nuclear lifecycle, including nuclear and radiation safety, licensing, nuclear technology and project support. Sweco already has experience in nuclear projects in countries including Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Lithuania and Norway, with services covering permitting, planning, construction, decommissioning and waste management. The addition of Platom will enhance Sweco’s ability to support both existing nuclear power lifecycle projects and new-build developments, including small modular reactors. The transaction also aligns with Sweco’s acquisition strategy, which focuses on adding specialist skills and strengthening its position as Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 2-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Sweco has signed an agreement to acquire Platom, a Finnish specialist consultancy serving the nuclear sector, strengthening its position in Finland and expanding its wider European expertise in nuclear infrastructure. The acquisition will make Sweco the leading nuclear consultancy in Finland and adds highly specialised capabilities across the full life cycle of nuclear operations.

Platom provides technical consulting services for nuclear operators, with expertise covering nuclear and radiation safety, licensing, nuclear technology and nuclear project support. The company has more than 25 years of experience in the sector and employs around 30 specialists.

The acquisition comes as nuclear power continues to gain renewed attention across Europe as part of the broader energy transition and the move toward fossil-free energy systems. As investment in the sector increases, demand is also rising for specialist engineering, advisory and technical expertise capable of supporting complex projects over long development timelines.

Thomas Hietto, Business Area President of Sweco in Finland, said Platom’s specialists will become an important part of Sweco, which already has broad experience in nuclear infrastructure across Europe. He noted that Platom’s position as Finland’s leading nuclear consultancy will strengthen Sweco’s competitiveness in both lifecycle projects for existing nuclear power operations and new-build projects, including small modular reactors.

Sweco has nuclear project experience in several European markets, including Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Lithuania and Norway. The company supports clients across areas such as permitting, project planning, construction, decommissioning and waste management. These services are increasingly important as nuclear projects require long-term technical coordination, strict regulatory compliance and specialist knowledge across multiple disciplines.

Hietto added that nuclear expertise is in strong demand among clients not only in Finland, but across Europe. He said the addition of Platom further strengthens Sweco’s ability to support customers in a sector where projects are technically demanding, highly regulated and often require specialist resources over extended periods.

Sweco positions nuclear power as one potential part of a balanced fossil-free energy mix, alongside other technologies needed to support the green transition. The company’s advisory work spans the production, transmission and storage of different energy types, giving it a broad role in helping clients navigate future energy systems.

The acquisition also supports Sweco’s wider growth strategy, which combines organic development with targeted acquisitions that add specialist capabilities and strengthen the Group’s market position. Sweco aims to expand its role as Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy by bringing in expertise that complements its workforce of 23,000 experts.

Over the past 20 years, Sweco has completed close to 170 acquisitions. In 2025 alone, the Group completed 13 acquisitions, adding more than 1,500 experts and approximately SEK 2.1 billion in annual net sales.

Through the acquisition of Platom, Sweco is strengthening its Finnish nuclear consulting platform while adding expertise that can support clients across Europe as nuclear infrastructure, existing asset management and new technologies such as small modular reactors become increasingly important in the energy transition.
