Saab to Supply Sensors and Command-and-Control Systems for Sweden’s Ground-Based Air Defence Capability

Saab to Supply Sensors and Command-and-Control Systems for Sweden’s Ground-Based Air Defence Capability

(IN BRIEF) Saab has secured an order worth approximately SEK 1.2 billion from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, for sensors and command-and-control systems to support a ground-based air defence solution for Swedish Army brigades. Deliveries are planned between 2029 and 2030. The contract builds on previous Saab deliveries to FMV and is intended to strengthen Sweden’s ability to detect and counter advanced aerial threats. The solution includes Saab’s Giraffe AMB radar and GBAD command-and-control system, combining surveillance radar capability with integrated command functions to provide forces with a fast and accurate understanding of the air situation. Saab says the order reinforces the role of its systems in supporting short- to medium-range ground-based air defence, freedom of manoeuvre and effective responses to changing operational conditions.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 2-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, FMV, to supply sensors and command-and-control systems for a ground-based air defence solution for Swedish Army brigades. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 1.2 billion, with deliveries scheduled to take place between 2029 and 2030.

The order will further develop Sweden’s ground-based air defence capability and builds on earlier deliveries from Saab to FMV. The systems are intended to give Swedish Army brigades stronger capacity to detect, assess and respond to advanced aerial threats in increasingly complex operational environments.

The solution includes Saab’s Giraffe AMB radar and GBAD command-and-control capabilities, which are designed to support short- to medium-range ground-based air defence operations. By combining surveillance radar performance with integrated command-and-control functionality, the system enables forces to build a rapid picture of the air situation and respond effectively to changing threats and tactics.

Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s business area Surveillance, said the company is proud to contribute to strengthening the ground-based air defence capability of Swedish Army brigades. He noted that the contract will enhance their ability to conduct air defence operations and represents important recognition of Saab’s Giraffe AMB and GBAD command-and-control system.

Giraffe AMB is designed to provide key operational advantages for air defence forces, including improved awareness, faster decision-making and more time to protect freedom of manoeuvre. Its role in short- and medium-range GBAD operations supports broader air superiority efforts by helping ground forces identify and counter aerial threats with speed and precision.

Through this contract, Saab will continue supporting Sweden’s defence modernization and reinforcing the Swedish Army’s ability to operate against evolving air threats across changing battlefield conditions.
