Alstom Secures Major Contract to Implement NExTEO Signalling System in Paris

This contract aims to enhance train reliability and performance in the region’s critical transport network. Alstom’s NExTEO signalling technology will contribute to achieving this objective, offering simultaneous control over operational and interoperability rules for both SNCF’s National Railway Network and RATP’s urban network. (PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 22-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Alstom (EPA: ALO), a French multinational rolling stock manufacturer and leader in sustainable and green mobility solutions, has been awarded a substantial framework contract valued at nearly 300 million euros to implement the cutting-edge NExTEO signalling system on the RER B and RER D lines within the Île-de-France region. This landmark contract for a new train automation, control, and supervision system underscores the trust placed in Alstom by key partners such as Île-de-France Mobilités, SNCF Réseau, SNCF Voyageurs, and RATP.

The NExTEO signalling solution, based on Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC²) technology, is a pivotal component of an overarching strategy aimed at modernizing and optimizing the infrastructure of the RER B and RER D lines. The primary goal is to enhance train reliability within the shared tunnel section connecting Gare du Nord and Châtelet-les-Halles stations, a critical transport artery.

The NExTEO signalling technology will not only ensure high performance in the densely populated central Paris area but also enable effective management of less densely populated suburban areas along the RER B and RER D lines within Île-de-France. Furthermore, it offers simultaneous control over operational and interoperability rules governing both the SNCF National Railway Network and the extensive RATP urban network, especially on the RER B line to the south.

Alstom’s proven leadership in the CBTC market is demonstrated by its advanced and high-performance urban signalling solutions deployed on 145 lines worldwide. In Europe, Alstom’s technology has already been successfully implemented in several major cities, including Madrid, Milan, Lyon, Lausanne, Paris, and Amsterdam, catering to various line types and automation levels.

For the implementation of the innovative Urbalis solution on the RER B and RER D lines within the Île-de-France region, Alstom will leverage the expertise of three of its French facilities. These include Saint-Ouen and Aix-en-Provence for system specifications, solution development, system integration, and deployment on the Île-de-France network. Additionally, technical expertise and support will be provided. The Villeurbanne facility will contribute to on-board CBTC equipment, trackside signalling products, as well as network, cybersecurity, and remote maintenance systems. Collectively, these three centers of excellence employ over 2,200 experts in railway signalling.
