Stora Enso Enhances Food Packaging Offering with Lightweight Trayforma Boards and New Unbleached Variant

(IN BRIEF) Stora Enso has expanded its Trayforma tray board range by introducing a reduced basis weight across its existing products and launching Trayforma Brown, a new unbleached board designed to meet demand for more natural-looking packaging. The lightweighted boards use less raw material while maintaining the same strength and performance, improving efficiency across the supply chain and lowering carbon emissions in production and transport. Trayforma Brown combines this performance with a premium natural appearance and introduces additional functionality, including the ability to withstand oven temperatures up to 220°C and compatibility with high-barrier packaging solutions. Built on a three-ply structure with CTMP, both innovations are designed for food applications such as ready meals, bakery, and chilled or frozen products, reflecting Stora Enso’s focus on delivering sustainable, high-performance packaging solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 29-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Stora Enso has introduced two key advancements to its Trayforma tray board portfolio, aimed at improving efficiency and expanding design options for food packaging applications. The update includes a reduction in basis weight across the existing Trayforma range, alongside the launch of Trayforma Brown, a new unbleached board designed to meet growing demand for more natural-looking packaging.

The lightweighting of the Trayforma range enables the use of less raw material while maintaining the same strength, forming capabilities, and converting performance as previous versions. This reduction in material usage improves yield throughout the value chain and contributes to a lower carbon footprint, both in production and transportation, offering sustainability benefits without compromising functionality.

In parallel, the introduction of Trayforma Brown brings a new aesthetic dimension to the portfolio. Developed to meet increasing market interest in packaging with a natural appearance, the product delivers the same technical performance as other Trayforma boards while offering a distinct unbleached look suitable for premium shelf presentation.

Trayforma Brown also introduces new functional capabilities. It is the first brown tray board within the range designed to support oven heating, withstanding temperatures of up to 220°C when combined with a transparent PET coating. Additionally, it can be paired with a high-barrier BarrPeel solution, making it suitable for vacuum-skin packaging applications.

Both the lightweighted Trayforma products and Trayforma Brown are constructed using a three-ply structure that incorporates CTMP in the middle layer. This design allows for reduced basis weight while preserving board thickness and performance characteristics. The materials are particularly suited for food categories such as ready meals, bakery products, as well as chilled and frozen foods.

Jaana Tani, Technical Account Manager for Trayforma at Stora Enso, noted that while the demand for natural-looking packaging continues to grow, customers still expect high performance. She emphasized that Trayforma Brown eliminates the need to choose between aesthetics and functionality, while the lightweighting improvements deliver efficiency gains across the entire value chain.

The new developments will be showcased at Interpack 2026, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany, from May 7 to 13.
