Rheinmetall components to equip next-generation RCH155 howitzers for German Armed Forces

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall will supply critical electrical systems, software, and 155 mm weapon systems for the Bundeswehr’s new RCH155 wheeled howitzer under a major procurement programme led by ARTEC GmbH. The first order covers 84 systems, valued at around €1.2 billion, and forms part of a wider framework agreement allowing for up to 500 units. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2029. Combining the firepower of an automated artillery gun with the mobility and protection of the Boxer armoured vehicle, the RCH155 offers long-range precision fire, high automation, and reduced crew requirements. The system is already being adopted by Ukraine and has attracted interest from the United Kingdom.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 22-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall will supply key weapon system components for the RCH155 wheeled howitzer, which is set to enter service with the Bundeswehr following a major procurement decision. The order has been placed with ARTEC GmbH, a joint venture between KNDS Germany and Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, under a framework agreement that allows for the procurement of up to 500 systems.

On 19 December 2025, ARTEC GmbH received a firm order for the first 84 RCH155 systems, together with training equipment as well as service and logistical support. The value of this initial order is approximately €1.2 billion. Deliveries of Rheinmetall’s components are scheduled to begin in 2027 and will be completed by 2029.

Under the programme, Rheinmetall will provide the electrical systems, software, and 155 mm weapon systems for integration into the RCH155 platform. ARTEC GmbH, which is also responsible for the Boxer vehicle family, will oversee overall system delivery to the German Armed Forces.

The RCH155 combines a fully automated and remotely controlled artillery gun module with the mobility and protection of the Boxer wheeled armoured vehicle. The system is capable of firing on the move and engaging targets with high precision at distances of up to 40 kilometres. Its design enables rapid deployment, long tactical range on roads, and a high level of operational mobility.

A high degree of automation allows the RCH155 to be operated by a two-person crew, consisting of a commander and a driver, representing a reduction compared with the Panzerhaubitze 2000. This automation also supports fast reaction times and steep-angle fire across a wide operational spectrum.

Beyond Germany, the RCH155 has already attracted international interest. Ukraine is the first user of the system, having ordered 54 units directly from KNDS Germany in three batches, with Rheinmetall again supplying the electrical systems, software, and weapon systems. The United Kingdom has also signalled its intention to procure the RCH155, following a cooperation agreement announced by the governments of Germany and the UK in April 2024.
