Bundeswehr advances digital battlefield capabilities with major Rheinmetall IdZ-ES system order

(IN BRIEF) Rheinmetall has been awarded a €1.04 billion contract by the Bundeswehr to modernize and expand its IdZ-ES soldier systems under a broader framework agreement running until 2030. The contract includes upgrades to existing systems and the delivery of 237 new platoon systems, ultimately equipping over 12,000 soldiers. These systems integrate advanced digital technologies, protective equipment, and communication capabilities, enabling improved battlefield connectivity. The modernization also ensures compatibility with the Bundeswehr’s D-LBO network, supporting future digital operations. The programme reflects Germany’s ongoing investment in next-generation defence capabilities and Rheinmetall’s key role in delivering them.

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 27-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Rheinmetall AG has secured a major follow-on contract from the Bundeswehr for the expansion and modernization of its Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System (IdZ-ES). The agreement, awarded by the BAAINBw, is valued at approximately €1.04 billion gross and represents a significant step in advancing Germany’s digital soldier capabilities.

The contract includes both the upgrade of existing systems and the delivery of 237 additional platoon systems, with production and delivery scheduled between November 2027 and December 2029. Once completed, the programme will equip an additional 8,600 soldiers, bringing the total number of IdZ-ES-equipped personnel to more than 12,000 across 353 platoon systems.

Each platoon system consists of around 35 individual soldier kits, complemented by a range of supporting equipment. These systems integrate advanced IT infrastructure, optical and optronic technologies, as well as modern protective gear, uniforms, and load-bearing equipment. Rheinmetall, acting as the prime contractor, is responsible for overall system integration and coordination of a supply chain involving more than 30 subcontractors.

This latest order is part of a broader framework agreement signed in February 2025 between Rheinmetall and BAAINBw, with a total potential value of up to €3.1 billion and a duration extending through 2030. The initial phase of the framework included modernization of 68 existing systems and the procurement of 24 new platoon systems, valued at approximately €417 million.

The German Bundestag recently approved €1.3 billion in funding for the programme, indicating the likelihood of additional orders under the framework in the coming years. The contract will be recorded in Rheinmetall’s order intake for the second quarter of 2026.

The IdZ-ES system plays a central role in enabling digitally networked operations on the modern battlefield. The upgraded version removes obsolete components and introduces enhanced communication and data exchange capabilities, allowing seamless integration with vehicle platforms and broader operational systems.

A key feature of the modernization is its compatibility with the Digitisation of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) network, a core component of the Bundeswehr’s future command and communication architecture. The updated systems are designed to connect directly to this network, enabling improved situational awareness, coordination, and operational effectiveness across units.

With this contract, Rheinmetall continues to strengthen its position as a leading provider of integrated soldier systems, supporting the Bundeswehr’s transition toward fully digitalized and networked defence operations.
