Fortum Recognised as Europe’s Leading Climate Performer as Nordic Energy Company Advances

(IN BRIEF) Fortum has been ranked as Europe’s top-performing company on climate in the latest Financial Times European Climate Leaders list, compiled with Statista. The ranking recognises companies that are making progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and evaluates factors such as reductions in both emissions intensity and total greenhouse gas emissions, commitments to the Science Based Targets initiative and Climate Disclosure Project grades. Fortum’s first-place ranking marks a notable improvement from 2025, when it ranked eighth overall and third in the Energy and Utilities sector. The company said the recognition reflects its progress in emissions reduction and its role as a Nordic energy company with one of the lowest carbon dioxide emissions profiles in Europe. Fortum generates power mainly from renewable and nuclear sources and aims to support industrial decarbonisation while advancing electrification in the Nordic region.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 28-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Fortum has been named Europe’s leading company on climate performance in the latest Financial Times European Climate Leaders list, compiled in partnership with Statista. The annual ranking recognises companies across Europe that are making measurable progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing climate-related commitments.

In this year’s list, Fortum was ranked as the top company overall among European businesses, marking a significant improvement from 2025, when the company placed eighth overall and third within the Energy and Utilities sector.

The Financial Times and Statista ranking assesses companies using several climate-performance indicators. These include reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, measured both by emissions intensity and total emissions, as well as corporate commitments to the Science Based Targets initiative and grades from the Climate Disclosure Project.

Fortum said the recognition reflects the progress it has made in reducing emissions and strengthening its role in Europe’s energy transition. The company, headquartered in the Nordics, generates reliable power mainly from renewable and nuclear sources and has positioned itself among the European energy companies with the lowest carbon dioxide emissions.

Tomas Qvickström, Vice President Corporate Sustainability at Fortum, said the company is proud of its progress in cutting emissions and pleased to see its work recognised by the Financial Times. He said Fortum’s low-emission generation portfolio supports industrial decarbonisation and helps societies maintain reliable access to power. He added that the company’s ambition is to drive electrification across the Nordic region.

Fortum’s climate strategy focuses on emissions reduction, climate mitigation and enabling customers and industries to decarbonise through access to reliable, low-emission electricity. The company’s performance in the European Climate Leaders list further highlights the role of Nordic energy producers in supporting Europe’s shift toward cleaner power systems and lower-carbon economic growth.
