Standard Chartered Appoints Shebani Baweja as Group Chief Data Officer to Lead Data Strategy and Analytics Across the Bank

(IN BRIEF)   Standard Chartered has appointed Shebani Baweja as Group Chief Data Officer, effective immediately. Based in Singapore, she will report to Alvaro Garrido, Chief Operating Officer for Technology & Operations and Chief Information Officer for Information Security & Data. In her new role, Baweja will lead the Group Data Office and guide the Bank’s data strategy, including how data is governed, managed and used across the organisation. Her mandate includes strengthening data foundations, embedding consistent practices and accelerating the use of data and analytics to support growth, innovation and decision-making. Baweja brings more than two decades of experience in data-led transformation and has been with Standard Chartered since 2008, holding senior roles across Wealth and Retail Banking and Technology & Operations. Most recently, she served as Chief Information Security Officer for Wealth and Retail Banking and International Markets, leading cyber risk strategy and strengthening controls and governance. Her appointment comes as Standard Chartered continues to expand its use of data and AI to support client services, innovation and responsible growth.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 28-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Standard Chartered has appointed Shebani Baweja as Group Chief Data Officer with immediate effect, reinforcing the Bank’s focus on data governance, analytics, digital transformation and responsible innovation.

Based in Singapore, Baweja will report to Alvaro Garrido, Chief Operating Officer for Technology & Operations and Chief Information Officer for Information Security & Data at Standard Chartered. In her new role, she will lead the Group Data Office and continue shaping the Bank’s enterprise-wide data strategy.

As Group Chief Data Officer, Baweja will set the direction for how data is governed, managed and applied across Standard Chartered. Her responsibilities will include strengthening the Bank’s data foundations, embedding consistent practices across the organisation and accelerating the use of data and analytics to support growth, innovation and better decision-making.

Baweja brings more than 20 years of experience in data-led digital transformation, technology, cyber risk and banking operations. Since joining Standard Chartered in 2008, she has held senior leadership roles across Wealth and Retail Banking and Technology & Operations transformation. Most recently, she served as Chief Information Security Officer for Wealth and Retail Banking and International Markets, where she led cyber risk strategy and helped strengthen controls, governance and security frameworks to protect clients, support business growth and enable digitisation.

Alvaro Garrido said Standard Chartered’s technology and data foundations are key enablers of world-class client service, particularly as the Bank continues to expand its use of data and artificial intelligence. He noted that Baweja’s leadership will be important in strengthening a data-driven culture that supports disciplined simplification while keeping risk, integrity and responsible use at the centre of the Bank’s operations.
