Baden-Württemberg-Backed Heidelberg-Harvard Partnership Begins Funding Initial Scientific Collaboration Projects

(IN BRIEF) Heidelberg University and Harvard University have begun the first joint research projects under their strategic partnership, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in August 2025. In the partnership’s first competitive selection round, 23 initiatives were chosen for funding from 30 submitted applications, with project funding starting on 1 April 2026. The selected initiatives are intended to deepen existing cooperation, expand transatlantic research networks, support interdisciplinary academic work and strengthen opportunities for early-career researchers. Seven projects are being funded through the Strategic Partnership Grant programme line, while 16 are supported by the Explorer Seed Fund. Around 220 academics are involved, including approximately 130 from Heidelberg University and 90 from Harvard University. The projects cover a wide range of disciplines across nine Heidelberg faculties, with medicine emerging as a major focus area. The partnership builds on decades of cooperation between Heidelberg and Harvard and is supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg through its Global Partnership in Science initiative, with ten million euros in funding allocated to help develop long-term international research collaboration.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 28-May-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Heidelberg University and Harvard University have begun implementing the first research projects under their strategic partnership, marking a new stage in the cooperation between the two institutions. The partnership was formally expanded in August 2025, when senior representatives from both universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at deepening existing academic ties and building a broader framework for long-term collaboration.

Following the first selection procedure, 23 joint initiatives have been chosen for funding. These projects are designed to strengthen established research links, expand transatlantic academic networks and advance initiatives with strong scientific potential. Funding for the selected projects began on 1 April 2026.

Prof. Dr Frauke Melchior, Rector of Heidelberg University, said the partnership projects form the central foundation of the scientific collaboration between the two universities. She noted that the initiatives are intended to create lasting research cooperation, promote innovative and interdisciplinary approaches and improve opportunities for early-career researchers.

The partnership also reflects Baden-Württemberg’s broader ambition to strengthen international scientific cooperation. Science Minister Petra Olschowski said the collaboration between Heidelberg University, a University of Excellence, and Harvard University is moving from a strategic agreement into a practical platform for high-level international research. She said the initiative reflects the goals of the state’s Global Partnership in Science programme and demonstrates Baden-Württemberg’s position as an internationally visible centre for science and research.

The first call for interest attracted 30 project applications. A joint commission from Heidelberg University and Harvard University reviewed the submissions through a competitive process and selected 23 projects for support. Seven of the selected initiatives fall under the Strategic Partnership Grant programme line, which is designed to expand institutional cooperation. The remaining 16 projects will be funded through the Explorer Seed Fund, which supports initiatives with immediate scientific momentum.

Around 220 academics are involved in the selected projects, with a strong emphasis on researchers in early career stages. Approximately 130 participants are based at Heidelberg University, while around 90 are affiliated with Harvard University. The first visits by researchers from the United States are planned for the 2026 summer semester, with most visiting researchers expected to come to Heidelberg during the 2026/2027 winter semester.

The funded projects span a broad range of academic disciplines at Heidelberg University. Successful applications came from nine different faculties, underlining the interdisciplinary scope of the partnership. Medicine represents a particularly strong area of focus, accounting for nine of the approved applications. Some of these medical initiatives build on long-standing cooperation between the two universities, including work in the field of Global Health.

The selected projects are expected to run for up to 24 months. A further call for applications is planned in the near future, allowing additional researchers from both institutions to develop new forms of cooperation under the strategic partnership.

The Heidelberg-Harvard partnership builds on decades of academic exchange. Harvard University has long been the U.S. institution with which Heidelberg University maintains its most extensive active cooperation. This history of collaboration provided the foundation for the decision by the leadership bodies of both universities to establish a formal strategic partnership in August 2025.

The state of Baden-Württemberg is supporting the partnership through the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts as part of its Global Partnership in Science activities. A total of ten million euros in funding is being provided to support the partnership and help develop long-term international research collaboration between Heidelberg and Harvard.
