(IN BRIEF) Hyogo Pulp Industries has placed a repeat order with ANDRITZ for a second DD-Washer drum displacer washer and a blowline refiner at its Tanigawa mill in Japan. Start-up is scheduled for May 2028. The order will support the mill’s production capacity expansion and sustainability goals. The DD-Washer is designed to improve washing efficiency, pulp quality and water use, while allowing the mill to shut down existing bottleneck washers. The blowline refiner will process high-kappa pulp, refine shives and improve pulp yield by reducing rejects from the screen room. The order follows Hyogo Pulp Industries’ earlier use of ANDRITZ equipment, including a DD-Washer started up in 2024 and evaporation and methanol liquefaction plants that enabled Japan’s first biomethanol production from a pulp mill.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 17-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Hyogo Pulp Industries, Ltd. has awarded international technology group ANDRITZ a repeat order for new pulp washing and refining equipment at its Tanigawa mill in Japan.

The order covers the supply of a second DD-Washer drum displacer washer and an ANDRITZ blowline refiner. The investment will support Hyogo Pulp Industries’ plans to expand production capacity while advancing the mill’s sustainability objectives.

Start-up of the new equipment is scheduled for May 2028.

The value of the order has not been disclosed. It was included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the first quarter of 2026.

The ANDRITZ DD-Washer is designed to deliver high washing efficiency and strong pulp quality while optimising water use and reducing the mill’s environmental footprint.

Its multi-stage design will allow Hyogo Pulp Industries to shut down existing washers. The system also enables the number of washing stages to be adjusted during operation, helping the mill match washing performance to changing production requirements.

The ANDRITZ blowline refiner will process high-kappa pulp and refine shives remaining in the pulp stream. It is also designed to increase pulp yield by significantly reducing rejects returned from the screen room.

Naoki Ikawa, Representative Executive Director of Hyogo Pulp Industries, said the company has been highly satisfied with the performance of the ANDRITZ DD-Washer started up in 2024.

“We have been very satisfied with the performance of the ANDRITZ DD-Washer, which was started up in 2024, and have therefore decided to install a second DD-Washer due to its high production capacity and excellent environmental performance,” said Ikawa.

He added that the investment will allow the company to shut down existing washers that have created bottlenecks in the process.

Together with the new ANDRITZ blowline refiner, the technologies are expected to make a significant contribution to Hyogo Pulp Industries’ sustainability goals.

Since 2025, Hyogo Pulp Industries has also been operating ANDRITZ evaporation and methanol liquefaction plants, enabling Japan’s first biomethanol production from a pulp mill. The milestone supports the company’s biorefinery initiatives and contributes to the transition toward a circular economy.

Hyogo Pulp Industries is a leading Japanese producer of unbleached kraft pulp. The company also supplies green electricity generated from biomass and promotes the effective use of wood resources in its pulp and power generation businesses, primarily using discarded wood as raw material.
