First of Five Large Scale Biogas Plants in Sweden Receives Final Construction Permits

(IN BRIEF) Gasum, a Swedish energy company, has received final construction permits for its latest biogas plant project in Götene. The plant will produce 120 GWh of liquefied biogas per year from early 2025, utilizing mainly manure as feedstock from the surrounding agricultural sector. The plant will also produce 350,000 tons of environmentally friendly fertilizers, which will be returned to the farmers providing the feedstock. Gasum is investing nearly 54 million euros in the Götene plant and it is the first in a series of five large-scale biogas plants the company plans to construct in Sweden in the next few years. The company’s goal is to derive a significant portion of its profits from green energy sources by 2027, increasing the role of biogas and trade in renewable electricity.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 10-Feb-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a Finnish government-owned energy company, announces that it has received final construction permits for its latest biogas plant project in Götene, Sweden. The Götene plant will produce 120 GWh of liquefied biogas (LBG) per year starting from 2025 and will utilize mainly manure from the surrounding agricultural sector as its feedstock. The plant will process approximately 400,000 tons of feedstock yearly and will generate 350,000 tons of environmentally friendly fertilizers that will be returned to the farmers.

Gasum is investing nearly 54 million euros in the Götene plant, with a 15 million euro grant from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet investment program. This marks the beginning of a series of five large-scale biogas plants that Gasum plans to construct in Sweden, including in Borlänge, Kalmar, Sjöbo, and Hörby. The company is also planning to build a biogas plant near Trondheim, Norway.

Gasum’s renewed strategy aims to invest strongly in increasing Nordic biogas availability in the coming years and to derive a significant portion of its profits from green energy sources by 2027. The Götene plant is a step towards realizing this goal as biogas and trade in renewable electricity play a larger role in the company’s operations.

With liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a stepping stone, Gasum envisions a future in which a significant portion of its profits come from green energy sources and the existing LNG infrastructure is directly usable for the transfer of LBG and synthetic methane.

“We are extremely happy to be proceeding with this project in Götene, because in the last couple of years we have seen interest in biogas intensify in the Nordic countries as well as across the whole of Europe. The Götene biogas plant will be the first step in Gasum’s ambitious plan for increasing the availability of renewable energy to our customers whether they are in the traffic, industry or maritime segment”, says Erik Woode, Head of Project Development & Execution at Gasum.
