DHL Freight Demonstrates Commitment to Sustainability with Berlin Terminal Upgrade

(PRESS RELEASE) BONN, 10-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Post DHL Group (ETR: DPW), a German multinational package delivery and supply chain management company, announces that DHL Freight, a leading European road freight provider, is embarking on a groundbreaking project to construct a new terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde. This strategically located facility, set on the premises of a former distillery in the southern part of Berlin, is a testament to DHL Freight’s commitment to expanding its German and European network while championing sustainability in logistics operations.

Spanning an impressive 20,000 square meters, the forward-thinking facility, comprising an office building and 49 loading bays, covers an area of 5,200 square meters. The new terminal in Marienfelde is designed to replace an outdated facility within the city, which could no longer meet the growing demands of the business due to capacity constraints. Another DHL Freight site is located outside Berlin in Wustermark. The primary objective of the new terminal is to enhance the efficient distribution of freight and shipments, particularly for the crucial last mile in Berlin. Operations at the new facility are expected to commence in the summer of 2024.

What sets this terminal apart is its green and sustainable focus. The terminal’s construction represents an expansion of network capacity for DHL Freight, located in close proximity to Berlin’s city center. It showcases innovation and sustainability, incorporating environmentally friendly technologies and solutions. The facility will employ alternative drive technologies for local transport, including electric forklifts, natural gas-powered (CNG) vehicles, with plans for battery electric trucks in the near future. The sustainability concept also encompasses a heat pump, a rainwater cistern, charging infrastructure powered by green electricity for both cars and trucks in local and long-distance transport, as well as a photovoltaic installation.

The groundbreaking ceremony for this forward-looking project took place in mid-November 2023, with the terminal scheduled for completion in mid-2024. DHL Freight is not only expanding its network but also paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in logistics operations.
