ABB Secures Major Contract to Support Eva Copper Mine Development and Strengthen Global Copper Supply

(IN BRIEF) ABB has been awarded a contract to supply gearless and ring-geared mill drive systems for the Eva Copper Mine Project in Queensland, Australia, developed by Harmony Gold. The project is expected to produce around 60,000 tonnes of copper annually over at least 15 years, contributing to global supply amid rising demand driven by the energy transition. ABB’s technology will enable efficient and reliable ore grinding, a critical part of mining operations, while incorporating locally engineered components to meet Australian standards. Supported by global engineering teams, the project highlights ABB’s role in advancing large-scale mining developments and supporting the production of critical materials essential for modern industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURICH, 15-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ABB has secured a contract to supply advanced grinding technologies for the Eva Copper Mine Project, a major new mining development led by Harmony Gold in Queensland, Australia. The agreement covers the delivery of both gearless mill drive (GMD) and ring-geared mill drive (RMD) systems, reinforcing ABB’s role in supporting the global supply of critical metals.

The Eva Copper Mine Project is positioned as a significant new source of copper, with expected annual production of approximately 60,000 tonnes over a projected mine life of at least 15 years. As global demand for copper continues to rise—driven largely by electrification and the energy transition—the project is expected to play an important role in strengthening supply chains for essential materials.

ABB’s solution is designed to maximise efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility in ore grinding processes, which are central to mining operations. The company will deliver a 24MW gearless mill drive system to power a 40-foot semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, along with an 18MW variable-speed dual-pinion ring-geared mill drive system for a 27-foot ball mill. These mills represent the largest energy consumers at the site, making energy efficiency a key factor in the technology selection.

The contract also includes the delivery of an eHouse, which will be engineered and manufactured locally in Australia to meet national standards and safety requirements. While local production is expected to streamline logistics and facilitate on-site integration, the project will benefit from ABB’s global engineering capabilities, with teams based in Australia, Finland, and Switzerland contributing to its execution.

Björn Jonsson, Global Business Line Manager for Mining and Materials within ABB’s Process Industries division, highlighted the strategic importance of the project. He noted that ABB’s combination of local manufacturing and global expertise will support one of Queensland’s most significant new mining developments, with the company’s technologies enabling efficient and reliable ore processing at the core of the operation.

Once installed, the integrated GMD and RMD systems will provide high availability and performance, ensuring efficient processing of copper ore throughout the life of the mine. The project also reflects broader industry trends, including increasing investment in large-scale mining operations and growing demand for critical minerals required for modern technologies and low-carbon energy systems.
