(IN BRIEF) Thales has unveiled the TopStar Smart Receiver, a compact and integrated solution designed to enhance positioning, navigation, and timing capabilities for military applications. Combining multiple functions into a single unit, the system offers improved resilience against jamming and spoofing while maintaining high accuracy and operational continuity. Its advanced GNSS integration, anti-jamming antenna technology, and extended synchronization capabilities make it particularly suited for use in contested environments. Manufactured within a European industrial base, the solution reflects a strategic emphasis on sovereignty and innovation, positioning Thales to support modern defense needs with reliable and scalable technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÉFENSE, 16-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Thales has introduced its latest innovation in defense technology with the launch of the TopStar Smart Receiver, an advanced, ultra-compact system designed to deliver robust positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities in a single integrated unit. The solution is engineered to support land-based military operations, including deployment across vehicles, unmanned aerial systems, and munitions, while maintaining reliable performance in highly contested electronic warfare environments.

The TopStar Smart Receiver consolidates three critical operational functions—positioning, navigation, and timing—into one compact device, offering a streamlined and cost-efficient solution for modern defense platforms. Its reduced size and optimized design make it particularly suitable for integration into space-constrained systems without compromising performance.

At the core of the system is a dual-constellation GNSS receiver that combines signals from both military-grade constellations, including Galileo PRS, and civilian GPS networks. This configuration enhances accuracy, availability, and resilience against spoofing attempts, ensuring reliable positioning even in challenging conditions.

The receiver is also equipped with advanced anti-jamming capabilities through an adaptive Controlled Radiation Pattern Antenna (CRPA). This feature significantly mitigates interference from hostile jamming sources, enabling the system to function at distances dramatically closer to such threats compared to conventional GPS receivers.

In addition, the TopStar Smart Receiver incorporates a high-precision internal clock, allowing continued synchronization of tactical communication systems for up to 48 hours in the event of GNSS signal disruption—substantially extending operational continuity beyond the limitations of standard equipment.

Developed and manufactured entirely within a European industrial framework, the system reflects a commitment to technological sovereignty and supply chain independence. Assembly takes place at Thales’ facility in Valence, France, reinforcing the company’s long-standing expertise in PNT technologies, built over more than three decades.

The solution is already available for field testing under real-world operational conditions, offering defense organizations an opportunity to evaluate its capabilities in practical scenarios.

Florent Chauvancy, Vice-President of Avionics and Flight activities at Thales, emphasized that the TopStar Smart Receiver integrates advanced technologies to deliver reliable and high-performance PNT capabilities. He highlighted its ability to ensure mission continuity in demanding environments, underscoring the company’s focus on innovation and operational effectiveness for armed forces.
