Scania expands people transport portfolio with launch of high efficiency 11 litre Super powertrain

(IN BRIEF) Scania has introduced the new 11-litre Super powertrain for people transport operations, expanding its lineup of efficient combustion engines. Designed for both urban and long-distance use, the Super 11 offers up to 10% fuel savings, improved durability, and enhanced serviceability. It features advanced technologies such as Variable Valve Braking, which improves braking performance while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The engine is compatible with renewable fuels and designed for a longer lifespan, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution for operators. The launch reinforces Scania’s commitment to innovation in transport while supporting the transition to lower-emission mobility solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) SÖDERTÄLJE, 27-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Scania AB has expanded its powertrain portfolio with the introduction of the new 11-litre Super engine, designed specifically for people transport operations across both urban and long-distance travel segments. The launch follows the recent debut of the 13-litre Super powertrain and further strengthens Scania’s offering of high-efficiency combustion solutions.

The Super 11 is positioned as a versatile alternative for operators seeking a balance between performance and efficiency. It delivers a notable improvement in fuel economy compared to the previous nine-litre engine, while offering power outputs of 350, 390, and 430 horsepower. This allows it to cover a wide range of applications, including some traditionally served by larger engines.

One of the key advantages of the new powertrain is its fuel efficiency, with potential savings of up to 10% depending on operating conditions. This performance is supported by advanced engineering features, including Variable Valve Braking (VVB) technology. By combining compression release braking with cam phasing, the system provides braking power of up to 350 kW, enhancing vehicle control while also contributing to lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions.

The VVB system also offers operational benefits by potentially replacing the need for a retarder, reducing vehicle weight by approximately 80 kilograms. This contributes not only to improved efficiency but also to quieter braking and better driving performance.

In terms of durability, the Super 11 engine is designed for an extended lifespan of up to two million kilometres, representing a 25% increase compared to earlier models. Serviceability has also been improved, with redesigned placement of oil and fuel filters on the cooler side of the engine. This allows maintenance work to be carried out more quickly, without waiting for the engine to cool, thereby minimizing downtime and improving operational efficiency.

The powertrain is compatible with renewable fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and biodiesel (FAME), supporting operators in reducing their environmental impact. Additional enhancements include upgraded rear axles, auxiliary braking systems for improved handling, and a new aftertreatment system with twin SCR technology that supports compliance with Euro 6 emissions standards while optimizing fuel efficiency and uptime.

Anders Liss, Global Head of Business Solutions for People Transport Solutions at Scania, emphasized that the Super 11 offers a competitive and sustainable solution for operators aiming to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining strong economic performance. He noted that the powertrain is particularly suited for applications where combustion technology will continue to play a role in the transition toward more sustainable transport systems.

With the introduction of the Super 11, Scania continues to focus on delivering efficient and adaptable solutions for the evolving needs of passenger transport operators.
