SSAB, Peab and Hjalmarssons inaugurate world’s first bridge built with SSAB Zero decarbonized steel in Sweden

(IN BRIEF) SSAB, Peab and Hjalmarssons have delivered the world’s first bridge built using SSAB Zero steel, a decarbonized steel made with recycled steel, fossil-free electricity and biogas. The pedestrian and bicycle bridge has been installed over the E22 highway in Lund, Sweden, as part of a major infrastructure upgrade by the Swedish Transport Administration. The bridge is 39 metres long, weighs just over 30 tonnes and uses SSAB Zero for approximately 95% of its steel content. SSAB said the material produces fossil carbon emissions of less than 0.05 kg CO2e per kg of steel within Scope 1 and 2, while Peab said the use of SSAB Zero reduced emissions by 70% compared with a conventional steel bridge, saving around 46 tonnes of CO2. The bridge was manufactured by Hjalmarssons in Sölvesborg without special production adjustments, as SSAB Zero has the same properties and processing characteristics as conventional steel. The project demonstrates how lower-emission steel can already be used in real infrastructure projects while maintaining established performance and manufacturing standards.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 12-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — SSAB, together with Peab and bridge manufacturer Hjalmarssons, has delivered the world’s first bridge built using SSAB Zero steel, marking a milestone for lower-emission steel use in infrastructure construction.

The pedestrian and bicycle bridge has been installed over the E22 highway in Lund, Sweden, as part of a major infrastructure upgrade led by the Swedish Transport Administration. The green-painted bridge is 39 metres long, weighs just over 30 tonnes and uses SSAB Zero for approximately 95% of its steel content.

SSAB Zero is produced using recycled steel, fossil-free electricity and biogas. According to SSAB, the process results in fossil carbon emissions of less than 0.05 kg CO2e per kg of steel in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, as defined under the GHG Protocol.

Matts Nilsson, Vice President and Head of Sales at SSAB Europe, said collaboration with customers and partners such as Peab and Hjalmarssons is essential to accelerating the transition toward more sustainable steel construction. He said the Lund bridge demonstrates that it is already possible to substantially reduce the carbon footprint of steel structures while maintaining the same performance and processing standards.

Peab said the project had high environmental requirements and that the use of SSAB Zero reduced carbon emissions by 70% compared with a bridge made from conventional steel. The reduction corresponds to a saving of around 46 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Tom Nordlindh, Construction Manager at Peab, said the bridge shows how climate ambitions can be translated into real infrastructure projects. He noted that the material choice allowed the project to meet demanding environmental goals while delivering the required functionality.

The bridge was manufactured by Hjalmarssons in Sölvesborg, Sweden. Since SSAB Zero has the same properties and processing characteristics as conventional steel, the company was able to manufacture the bridge without special adjustments to its production process.

Fredrik Andersson, CEO of Hjalmarssons, said the company had not previously worked with SSAB Zero but found no difference compared with processing conventional steel. He said participating in the development of more sustainable materials is something the company values highly.

The project highlights how decarbonized steel can be applied in practical infrastructure settings without compromising conventional production workflows. It also demonstrates the role of collaboration across the steel, construction and infrastructure supply chain in reducing emissions from built environment projects.

The inauguration of the Lund bridge positions SSAB Zero as a commercially usable material for infrastructure applications and provides a visible example of how recycled steel, fossil-free energy and biogas can help reduce the climate impact of steel-based construction.
