Vattenfall and Industrikraft’s Videberg Kraft Advances Swedish Nuclear Plans with Rolls-Royce SMR Selection

Vattenfall and Industrikraft’s Videberg Kraft Advances Swedish Nuclear Plans with Rolls-Royce SMR Selection

(IN BRIEF) Videberg Kraft, the nuclear power company owned by Vattenfall and Industrikraft, has selected Rolls-Royce SMR as supplier for new nuclear power at the Värö Peninsula in Sweden, next to Ringhals. The decision follows a four-year evaluation process that began with more than 70 supplier options and has now moved into detailed planning for three small modular reactors. Each reactor would have an output of 470 MW, with the three units together expected to produce around 12 TWh of fossil-free electricity annually, providing a significant contribution to southern Sweden’s energy supply. Rolls-Royce SMR’s concept is based on proven pressurised water reactor technology, the same technology used at Ringhals, and uses modularised manufacturing to reduce on-site complexity and delivery risk. The project is positioned as part of Sweden’s renewed nuclear development after more than 40 years and is intended to support industrial transition, energy security and long-term national competitiveness.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 16-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Videberg Kraft has selected Rolls-Royce SMR as the supplier for new nuclear power planned at the Värö Peninsula in Sweden, next to the existing Ringhals site. The decision marks a major step in the work being carried out by Videberg Kraft, the nuclear power company owned by Vattenfall and Industrikraft, to enable new nuclear generation in Sweden.

The next stage will involve detailed planning for three reactors based on small modular reactor technology, commonly known as SMRs. Each reactor is expected to have an output of 470 MW, with the three units together capable of producing around 12 TWh of fossil-free electricity per year. The planned capacity would provide an important contribution to electricity supply in southern Sweden.

Videberg Kraft has been working through a detailed evaluation process for four years, starting with more than 70 possible supplier options before selecting Rolls-Royce SMR. The supplier selection process has also been reviewed by an independent party.

Anna Borg, board member of Videberg Kraft and President and CEO of Vattenfall, said the decision represents a major step forward together with Industrikraft and Videberg Kraft in the journey toward new nuclear power in Sweden for the first time in more than 40 years. She said new nuclear power is an important part of the Swedish energy system and will support industrial transition while strengthening Sweden’s long-term competitiveness.

Rolls-Royce SMR offers an industrialised nuclear concept designed to reduce the risk of project delays. The technology is based on proven pressurised water reactor technology, the same type of reactor technology currently used at Ringhals. Its modular construction approach means components are manufactured and assembled in a controlled industrial environment before being delivered to the site for final assembly.

Martin Darelius, Acting Head of New Nuclear at Vattenfall, said Rolls-Royce SMR was selected because it offered the strongest overall conditions for delivering a successful project. He said the assessment had been highly thorough and independently reviewed, adding that Vattenfall will continue to provide full support as the work progresses.

The planned reactors will use modularised manufacturing, with each component delivered in full to the operating site and then assembled. This approach is intended to support more predictable delivery, reduce on-site construction complexity and help manage project risk.

Rolls-Royce SMR is a British company whose principal owner, Rolls-Royce, has long-standing experience as a supplier of nuclear-powered submarine technology. Rolls-Royce SMR has further developed this background into a modular reactor concept for civil nuclear power.

The selection of Rolls-Royce SMR advances Videberg Kraft’s plans for new nuclear capacity at the Värö Peninsula and supports Sweden’s wider effort to expand fossil-free electricity production for industry, energy security and long-term competitiveness.
