BT will design and build an open-access full-fibre network capable of download speeds of up to 1 Gbps, giving businesses choice among internet service providers while also enabling nearby homes and businesses to benefit as the network expands. The contract also includes digital skills support for small and medium-sized businesses, with virtual workshops, practical tools and tailored guidance to help improve digital capability and productivity. The Business Park Full Fibre to the Premises Project will bring gigabit-capable broadband to business parks in Mid Wales that currently lack access to high-quality connectivity. The project is designed to support local firms by giving them faster, more reliable and future-ready digital infrastructure in an increasingly connected economy.

The initiative forms part of the Growing Mid Wales Digital Programme and the wider Mid Wales Growth Deal, a £110 million investment supported by the UK and Welsh Governments to encourage economic growth across the region.

The project will focus specifically on business park properties that are not covered by existing commercial broadband rollouts or other publicly funded programmes. This targeted approach is intended to ensure that investment reaches employment sites that would otherwise miss out on full-fibre infrastructure.

In addition to the identified business parks, the network build is expected to enable nearby homes and businesses to upgrade to full fibre as infrastructure is extended through the area. This will broaden the impact of the investment and help more communities benefit from gigabit-capable connectivity.

Under the contract, BT will design and build a full-fibre network capable of supporting download speeds of up to 1 Gbps, with flexibility to meet future demand. The network will operate on an open-access basis, allowing businesses to choose broadband services from a range of internet service providers rather than being tied to one supplier.

Councillor Bryan Davies, Leader of Ceredigion County Council, and Councillor Jake Berriman, Leader of Powys County Council, Co-Chairs of the Growing Mid Wales Board, said the project shows growing momentum behind the Mid Wales Growth Deal and marks a major step forward for the region.

They said access to gigabit-capable full fibre at business parks will strengthen the foundations for regional growth, improve competitiveness and help businesses adopt modern digital tools and services. They also highlighted that the project targets premises outside the scope of existing commercial or public programmes, extending the benefits of full fibre to more communities and employment locations.

The Business Park FTTP Project supports the wider Growing Mid Wales vision of addressing connectivity challenges and unlocking economic benefits from digital infrastructure investment. It is also intended to support inclusive growth and long-term resilience across Mid Wales.

Susi Marston, Head of Public Sector Wales at BT, said reliable, high-quality broadband can make a significant difference to how businesses operate every day. She said the programme will help more people and places benefit from dependable digital access and support businesses as they innovate and grow.

As part of the contract, BT will also provide digital skills support for small and medium-sized businesses across Mid Wales. The programme will include virtual sessions led by industry experts, with practical workshops, tools and tailored guidance to help firms build digital capability and improve productivity.

Targeted promotional activity will be used to ensure businesses across the region are aware of the digital skills support and can take part in the programme.

Network rollout has already begun, with businesses encouraged to follow Growing Mid Wales updates as the project progresses.

Adam Price, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, welcomed the rollout of full-fibre broadband to business parks across Mid Wales. He said gigabit-capable connectivity will help local firms grow, innovate and compete more effectively, while supporting long-term prosperity, stronger Welsh businesses and sustainable high-quality jobs.

Wales Office Minister Anna McMorrin said the UK Government’s investment in the Mid Wales Growth Deal is helping deliver practical change for businesses and communities across the region. She said the broadband rollout will allow businesses in Ceredigion and Powys to work more efficiently, reach more customers and improve connectivity for local people.

The announcement builds on BT’s presence in Wales, where the company employs more than 4,500 people and contributes £680 million to the Welsh economy.
