(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 23-Feb-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Telefónica (BME: TEF, NYSE: TEF), a Spanish multinational telecommunications company, and Ericsson have unveiled a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering consumers to unlock the full potential of premium 5G network connectivity through on-demand network slicing. This innovative approach, available in Android 14 since December 2023, marks a significant leap forward in consumer experience and service customization.

Tested at the renowned 5TONIC Lab in Madrid, Spain, this proof of concept (PoC) promises consumers an unparalleled level of service personalization and performance enhancement. By offering time-restricted premium subscriptions accessible for on-demand purchase, delivered via dedicated network slices provided by Telefónica, subscribers can tailor their service experience to their specific needs and preferences.

Cayetano Carbajo, Director of Core & Transport in Telefonica CTIO, Telefónica, commented, ”This work is a step forward in the Telefonica’s customer journey into slicing enabling monetization of Network assets in residential market. This mechanism allows on-demand session-based services associated to a tailored quality of experience. Telefonica is pleased with the level of maturity reached through Ericsson’s technology and a large set of device manufacturers such as Google Pixel, Samsung Electronics and Xiaomi Technology”.

Mats Karlsson, Head of Solution Area Business and Operations Support Systems, Ericsson, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “This new approach to network slicing, making innovative use of Ericsson Dynamic Network Slicing, represents a key milestone in Ericsson and Telefónica’s ongoing network slicing journey and is set to drive consumer experience to new innovation heights. It will enable subscribers to, for example, access exclusive interactive content during a live concert or subscribe to premium experiences during specific events that involve the use of a network slice.”

The on-demand process, defined in the GSMA TS.43 specification (July 2023), has been meticulously developed and implemented in collaboration between Telefónica’s network, Android OS in devices, and Ericsson supplying the underlying network architecture, including its Secure Entitlement Server (SES). Ericsson Charging ensures proper monetization of 5G slicing.

This initiative represents a culmination of Ericsson and Telefónica’s longstanding collaboration in the realm of network slicing, which initially focused on showcasing network slicing capabilities and later expanded to facilitate slicing consumption and monetization. The results of this Proof of Concept will be showcased at Ericsson’s booth at MWC24 in Barcelona as part of the Ericsson Dynamic Network Slicing demonstration.
