(PRESS RELEASE) HANOVER, 22-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — MTU Maintenance is marking a decade of involvement in servicing the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine, highlighting its growing role within the global maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) network. The milestone traces back to 2016, when the first GTF engine was inducted at the company’s Hannover facility, laying the foundation for what has since become a significant share of worldwide servicing activity for the engine family.

Over the past ten years, MTU has steadily expanded its MRO footprint, strengthening its global network through key partnerships and joint ventures. These include EME Aero, developed together with Lufthansa Technik, and MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, established in cooperation with China Southern Airlines. Together, these facilities now handle roughly one-third of all GTF engine shop visits globally each year, covering the full range of engine variants, including the PW1100G-JM, PW1500G, and PW1900G.

The collaboration between Pratt & Whitney, MTU Aero Engines, and the Japanese Aero Engines Corporation has played a central role in shaping the success of the GTF program. This partnership has enabled the continuous development of technical expertise, operational processes, and repair capabilities that support the expanding global fleet.

To meet rising demand, MTU has significantly increased its servicing capacity while working to shorten turnaround times for customers. The company has committed to delivering more than 600 GTF-related shop visits annually, reflecting the scale of the growing market. Recent milestones include EME Aero’s completion of its 1,000th engine overhaul in early 2026 and the successful ramp-up of the Jinwan expansion at MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, which handled 65 shop visits in its first year.

In addition to its main overhaul facilities, MTU supports the GTF program through specialized repair operations at its Munich and Berlin-Brandenburg locations, further enhancing the network’s overall efficiency and capability.

The company’s long-standing experience with the GTF engine has enabled it to contribute to numerous advancements in maintenance processes and repair techniques. This accumulated expertise is expected to play an important role as the next iteration, the GTF Advantage, enters service, further strengthening the support provided to airline customers worldwide.

The GTF engine family itself has established a strong position in the single-aisle aircraft segment, offering notable efficiency gains. Compared to previous engine generations, it delivers significantly lower fuel consumption and reduced noise levels. With more than 13,000 orders and commitments from over 90 customers, and tens of millions of flight hours logged, the engine continues to see widespread adoption across the aviation industry.
