ANDRITZ Secures Major Contract to Equip India’s Largest Pumped Storage Hydropower Facility

Contract signing for the Saidongar-1 Karjat pumped storage project

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has been awarded a major contract to supply equipment for India’s largest pumped storage plant, the 3,000 MW Saidongar-1 Karjat project in Maharashtra, developed by Torrent Power. The project includes the delivery of ten pump turbines and related systems, with full engineering and installation responsibilities handled by ANDRITZ. Once operational, the plant will generate over 6,000 GWh annually and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 4.55 million tonnes per year. The initiative supports India’s growing renewable energy sector by providing grid stability and reliable power supply, while reinforcing ANDRITZ’s strong position in the country’s hydropower market.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 14-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — ANDRITZ has secured a major contract to supply key technologies for India’s largest pumped storage hydropower facility, further strengthening its position in the country’s renewable energy sector. The project, commissioned by Torrent Power through its subsidiary Torrent Energy Storage Solutions, involves equipping the Saidongar-1 Karjat pumped storage plant in Maharashtra with advanced electromechanical systems.

The order, valued in the low three-digit million euro range, will contribute to ANDRITZ’s order intake for the first quarter of 2026. The company’s responsibilities include the full lifecycle delivery of the equipment, covering design, manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning of ten reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and associated systems. The project will be executed using ANDRITZ’s manufacturing capabilities in India, supported by its global engineering network.

With a planned capacity of 3,000 megawatts, Saidongar-1 Karjat is set to become the largest pumped storage plant in India. The facility is expected to play a central role in stabilizing the country’s power grid as renewable energy sources such as solar and wind continue to expand. Once operational, the plant will generate approximately 6,241 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, supporting both economic development and energy reliability.

The environmental impact of the project is significant, with projected carbon dioxide emissions reductions of around 4.55 million tonnes per year. This reduction is comparable to removing approximately one million cars from the road, highlighting the plant’s contribution to India’s decarbonisation efforts.

Torrent Power emphasized the strategic importance of the development, noting that the project represents a major step in advancing round-the-clock renewable energy supply in India. By combining pumped storage technology with renewable generation, the facility will enhance energy availability and support long-term sustainability goals.

The contract further reinforces ANDRITZ’s expertise in pumped storage solutions, a technology increasingly recognized as essential for balancing variable renewable energy and ensuring grid stability. The company is currently involved in the development of seven pumped storage projects across India, reflecting its growing footprint in the region.

Through this collaboration, ANDRITZ and Torrent Power are strengthening their partnership by integrating engineering expertise with operational capabilities. The Saidongar-1 Karjat project exemplifies a forward-looking approach to energy infrastructure, where large-scale storage solutions are deployed to complement renewable energy expansion and ensure consistent, cost-effective power supply.
