AFRY Partners with Landsvirkjun for Iceland’s First Utility-Scale Wind Farm at Búrfell

(IN BRIEF) Iceland’s state-owned energy company, Landsvirkjun, has partnered with AFRY to develop the country’s first utility-scale wind farm at Búrfell. With a capacity of 120 MW from 28 turbines, the project will utilize the existing hydropower infrastructure to minimize environmental impact. AFRY has been instrumental in providing technical support from the early stages and will continue to assist through the construction phase. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 22-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s state-owned energy company, has chosen AFRY as its technical partner for the development of the Búrfell wind farm, marking a historic milestone as Iceland’s first utility-scale wind power project. This strategic collaboration will help expand Iceland’s energy capacity and accelerate its transition to renewable energy.

Situated in southern Iceland, the Búrfell wind farm will consist of 28 turbines, collectively generating 120 MW of clean energy. The project will utilize the existing infrastructure of the Búrfell hydropower plant, aiming to reduce both environmental impact and construction costs. With the wind farm’s development now underway, AFRY has been integral in providing technical advisory services since the project’s launch in 2023. Their contributions include designing the wind farm layout, conducting energy yield assessments, and overseeing the procurement process, which led to the selection of Enercon as the turbine supplier.

As the project moves into its construction phase, AFRY has been confirmed as Landsvirkjun’s trusted owner’s engineer. AFRY will continue to assist with the detailed design of the balance of plant (BoP), working in close collaboration with Icelandic local firms to ensure smooth coordination across all stages of the project.

Construction on the Búrfell wind farm commenced in the autumn of 2024, with the project expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

Hörður Arnarson, CEO of Landsvirkjun, shared his thoughts on the partnership, saying: “Iceland’s first utility-scale wind farm represents a major step for our energy sector. AFRY has been an invaluable partner from the outset, and their expertise will be essential as we continue to develop this pioneering project. Wind energy will become the third pillar of Iceland’s energy system, alongside hydropower and geothermal energy, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with AFRY.”

Jonathan Sistonen, Head of Wind & Solar for North and West Europe at AFRY, expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing collaboration: “We are excited to take the next step in this important project for Iceland. With over 30 years of experience in wind power and a strong presence in the Nordic region, AFRY is proud to contribute to the development of Iceland’s wind energy capacity and help accelerate the country’s renewable energy transition.”
