AFRY Plays Key Role in Uganda’s Largest Power Project with Inauguration of 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Plant

(IN BRIEF) Uganda’s largest power generation facility, the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Plant, was officially inaugurated by President Yoweri Museveni on September 26, 2024. Located on the Kyoga Nile River, the plant boosts Uganda’s energy capacity from 1,400 MW to 2,000 MW, providing a more reliable power supply for homes and industries. The plant, built with the expertise of AFRY as the Owner’s Engineer, will support the country’s economic growth and sustainability goals. AFRY’s team, in partnership with Sinohydro Corporation Ltd., completed the project, and the plant is now integrated into Uganda’s national grid.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 1-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — On September 26, 2024, President Yoweri Museveni inaugurated the Karuma Hydropower Plant, Uganda’s largest power generation facility. The 600 MW plant, located on the Kyoga Nile River, about 270 km north of Kampala, represents a major milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure, ensuring enhanced power supply for both domestic and industrial purposes.

AFRY, an international engineering and design company, has been a key contributor to the project since 2016. Initially serving as the Strategic Project Management Consultant, AFRY later assumed the role of Owner’s Engineer (OE) for the plant in 2019, overseeing various aspects of its construction and operational readiness.

The Karuma Hydropower Plant features six vertical Francis turbine units, each with a capacity of 100 MW, contributing to its total installed capacity of 600 MW. A significant breakthrough was achieved in June 2024 when AFRY issued the Certificate of Completion to Sinohydro Corporation Ltd., the EPC contractor, officially marking the plant’s operational readiness and its integration into Uganda’s national grid.

Victor de Genot de Nieukerken, Karuma Project Director at AFRY, shared his pride in the success of the project:

“As we celebrate the commissioning of the Karuma Hydropower Plant, we are proud to have played a crucial role in delivering a reliable energy source for Uganda’s communities and industries. The dedication and expertise of the AFRY team, with members from both Switzerland and Uganda, have been instrumental in achieving this success. This project marks a key step in advancing Uganda’s sustainability goals and economic development.”

Mr. Victor de Genot de Nieukerken is a Senior Project Manager with over 15 years of experience in the hydropower sector and, as international business manager, is responsible for Sales/Client Relations for the Hydropower and Dam unit of AFRY Switzerland.

With the Karuma Hydropower Plant now operational, Uganda’s power generation capacity has increased from 1,400 MW to 2,000 MW, significantly improving energy reliability and supporting the nation’s economic growth trajectory.
