UK Sovereign AI Capability Strengthened as BT and Nscale Develop New Data Centre Infrastructure

(IN BRIEF) BT has partnered with Nscale, with support from NVIDIA, to develop sovereign AI data centres in the UK, marking a significant step in expanding the country’s AI infrastructure and computing capacity. The project will deliver up to 14 megawatts of AI data centre power across BT sites, enabling organisations to run AI workloads locally while maintaining control over data, security, and regulatory compliance. By integrating advanced AI infrastructure with BT’s nationwide connectivity, the initiative aims to support a wide range of applications across sectors such as healthcare, public services, and critical industries. The collaboration also aligns with the UK’s broader strategy to strengthen its AI capabilities, boost economic growth, and enhance resilience through domestic infrastructure. In addition to supporting innovation and competitiveness, the development is expected to create new opportunities for businesses and public sector organisations to adopt AI technologies more efficiently and securely, reinforcing the importance of sovereign digital ecosystems in the future of the UK economy.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 23-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — BT Group has announced a strategic collaboration with Nscale to accelerate the development of sovereign artificial intelligence capabilities in the United Kingdom, supported by advanced technologies from NVIDIA. The initiative focuses on building new AI data centre infrastructure that will allow organisations to deploy and scale AI solutions securely within UK borders.

Under the agreement, Nscale plans to develop up to 14 megawatts of AI data centre capacity across three existing BT sites. BT will provide the underlying infrastructure and connectivity, leveraging its nationwide network to support high-performance, scalable AI workloads. The project is intended to significantly expand the UK’s computing capacity in response to increasing demand for AI-driven applications across multiple sectors.

The collaboration forms part of BT’s broader sovereign digital platform, enabling organisations in both the public and private sectors to run AI models domestically while maintaining control over data, compliance, and operational governance. This approach supports critical requirements such as data residency and regulatory adherence, while allowing businesses to scale AI capabilities without significant upfront investment in infrastructure.

The new sovereign AI infrastructure is expected to support a wide range of use cases, including advanced data analysis in healthcare and research, as well as applications in public services and key industries such as energy, finance, and security. By providing localised, high-capacity computing resources, the initiative aims to strengthen the UK’s ability to adopt AI technologies at scale while ensuring resilience and control over sensitive data.

Kanishka Narayan highlighted the importance of expanding domestic AI infrastructure to unlock economic growth, emphasizing that investment in data centres will help businesses and public services harness AI more effectively while supporting job creation and national competitiveness. Jon James noted that trusted, high-capacity networks are essential to enabling AI at scale, positioning BT’s infrastructure as a foundation for the UK’s sovereign digital ambitions.

Tom Burke underlined the critical role of telecommunications infrastructure in supporting large-scale AI deployment, while Anthony Hills emphasized the importance of secure and high-performance networks in unlocking the full potential of accelerated computing within a sovereign framework.

The initiative also aligns with broader national and industry efforts, including the UK Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan and the formation of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum, where BT, Nscale, and NVIDIA are among the founding members. These efforts aim to strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem, enhance skills development, and promote innovation while ensuring that data and infrastructure remain under domestic control.

Overall, the collaboration reflects a growing emphasis on building sovereign AI infrastructure that supports technological advancement, economic growth, and national resilience in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
