thyssenkrupp nucera’s scalum® Wins German Sustainability Award for Innovation in Green Hydrogen Technology

(IN BRIEF) thyssenkrupp nucera’s 20 MW scalum® electrolysis module has won the German Sustainability Award for its pioneering role in green hydrogen production. Recognized for its modular, scalable design, scalum® enables large-scale green hydrogen production and supports industry sustainability goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 7-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — thyssenkrupp nucera has received the prestigious German Sustainability Award in the “Products” category for its scalable 20 MW alkaline water electrolysis module, scalum®. Chosen from approximately 60 nominees in the “Climate” transformation sector, scalum® was recognized for its “leading role in sustainability” and its position as a “beacon” in sustainable technology, according to the independent expert jury. The award will be presented on November 29, 2024, at the German Sustainability Day event in Düsseldorf.

Dr. Werner Ponikwar, CEO of thyssenkrupp nucera, highlighted the significance of green hydrogen in achieving climate goals, stating, “scalum® is key to making affordable, large-scale green hydrogen a reality. This award validates our commitment to developing technology solutions for a sustainable and energy-efficient future.”

Introduced last year, scalum® is a modular and scalable electrolysis solution, each 20 MW module comprising around 300 efficient electrolysis cells. Multiple modules can be linked to form large industrial plants, enabling high-capacity green hydrogen production for projects like the 700 MW green steel plant at Stegra in Sweden. A single soccer field could house approximately 20 scalum® modules, producing over 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.

The German Sustainability Award Foundation, Europe’s largest recognition for environmental and social responsibility, honors organizations contributing to transformation and sustainability. Dr. Christoph Noeres, Head of Green Hydrogen at thyssenkrupp nucera, remarked on the award’s encouragement, emphasizing their drive to continually innovate sustainable technologies.
