Scania and Nobina Expand Renewable-Fuel Bus Fleet for Regional Travel in Southern Sweden

Scania Irizar i4 biogas coach for regional transport

(IN BRIEF) Scania has signed an agreement to supply 27 new biogas buses for intercity public transport services operated by Nobina on behalf of Skånetrafiken in Sweden. The buses will be deployed on the Malmö-Lund and Kristianstad routes and have been adapted for longer regional journeys with coach seats, toilets and additional interior options. Powered by biogas, a renewable fuel produced from waste products, the vehicles are designed to reduce CO₂ emissions, lower noise levels and support more secure local fuel supply. The order expands the existing fleet of Scania biogas buses used by Skånetrafiken and strengthens the region’s long-term investment in renewable fuels. The buses will be bodybuilt by Irizar as the Scania Irizar i4 model, marking the model’s first use in Swedish public transport operations. Deliveries will be supported by Irizar’s Swedish representative, LECAB Lastbilar AB.

(PRESS RELEASE) SÖDERTÄLJE, 18-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Scania has signed an agreement to supply 27 new biogas buses for intercity public transport services in Sweden, reinforcing the continued shift toward lower-emission regional mobility.

The buses will be operated by Nobina on behalf of Skånetrafiken, the public transport authority in Skåne. They will be introduced on the Malmö-Lund and Kristianstad routes, where they will support regional travel with lower noise levels, reduced emissions and passenger-focused comfort features.

The vehicles will use biogas, a renewable fuel produced from waste products. Scania said the use of biogas can contribute to CO₂ reductions while also strengthening fuel supply security. In Sweden, a large share of compressed biogas is produced locally, allowing economic value to be created close to where the fuel is used.

The new buses have been specified according to Skånetrafiken’s requirements and adapted for longer journeys. They will include coach seats, a toilet and additional interior options, giving passengers a more comfortable travel experience. The lower noise levels of the biogas powertrain are also expected to contribute to improved onboard comfort.

The order will further expand the fleet of Scania biogas buses already operating for Skånetrafiken. It also builds on long-term investments in renewable fuels in the region and reflects positive experience from existing cooperation and current operations.

Helena Ericson, Fleet Manager at Nobina, said sustainability is important to the company, while the vehicles also need to be easy to own and operate. She said this matters for drivers, passengers and Nobina’s daily mission to deliver reliable transport services.

The buses will be bodybuilt by Irizar and delivered as the Scania Irizar i4 model. The order marks the first use of this specific model in Swedish public transport operations. While new to the Swedish market, the Scania Irizar i4 has already been used successfully in several European countries, particularly in Southern Europe, where biogas is also commonly used.

Rutger Hörndahl, Key Account Manager at Scania Sverige, said biogas is a circular and locally produced solution that provides immediate climate benefits. He said the Scania Irizar i4 will give Nobina a modern, quiet, energy-efficient and comfortable bus suited to regional travel.

Hörndahl added that Scania is proud to continue contributing to the sustainable development of public transport in the Skåne region.

The buses will be delivered in close cooperation with Irizar’s Swedish representative, LECAB Lastbilar AB, supporting the process from production through delivery and the start of operations.

Through the agreement, Scania, Nobina and Skånetrafiken are continuing their focus on renewable-fuel public transport while improving passenger comfort on intercity routes in southern Sweden.
