Nokia and Lenovo Renew Intellectual Property Collaboration Through New Patent Licensing Agreement

(IN BRIEF) Nokia and Lenovo have signed a new multi-year, multi-technology patent cross-license agreement, building on their previous agreement from 2021. The financial and commercial terms remain confidential. The agreement reflects the importance of intellectual property licensing in the technology sector, where companies contribute inventions to open standards and license technologies on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. Nokia said the deal highlights the strength of its patent portfolio and its long-term investments in research and standardisation, while Lenovo said effective IP licensing helps companies innovate faster, meet industry standards and bring products to customers more efficiently. The agreement supports both companies’ broader technology ecosystems, with Nokia focused on connectivity and Lenovo operating across personal devices, infrastructure, software, services and AI-related technologies.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 18-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia and Lenovo have signed a new multi-year, multi-technology patent cross-license agreement, continuing their intellectual property relationship and supporting access to patented technologies used across the global technology sector.

The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, in line with the confidentiality agreed between the two companies. Nokia and Lenovo previously signed a patent agreement in 2021.

The new agreement reflects the role of patent licensing in enabling technology companies to build on established innovation, support industry standards and bring new products and services to market more efficiently. Both companies contribute inventions to open standards and license relevant technologies on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms, commonly known as FRAND terms.

Susanna Martikainen, Chief Licensing Officer at Nokia, said Nokia advances connectivity and enables other companies to build on its innovation by licensing patented technologies. She said the agreement with Lenovo was concluded on an amicable basis and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, as well as decades of investment in research and standardisation.

Taylor Ludlam, Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Lenovo, said innovation is central to every technology company’s success. He noted that Lenovo invests significantly in research and development to create new products and technologies, while also supporting the wider technology ecosystem through intellectual property licensing.

Ludlam added that effective IP licensing helps companies innovate faster, comply with industry standards and deliver new products to customers more efficiently. He described the cross-license agreement as an example of industry best practice that supports continued innovation for customers.

Nokia said its patented technologies are used in more than a billion new devices every year, reflecting the broad reach of its research and standardisation work across consumer electronics and connectivity.
