Maersk Strengthens Energy Transition Logistics with North American Battery Freight Service

(IN BRIEF) A.P. Moller – Maersk has launched a dedicated lithium-ion battery transportation solution within its North American Maersk Ground Freight network, targeting the safe and compliant movement of Class 9 batteries across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The new capability is designed for automotive, electric vehicle and advanced manufacturing customers and positions Maersk in a U.S. lithium-ion battery transportation market estimated at $2.4 billion to $3.0 billion. The programme extends Maersk’s dangerous goods expertise from ocean and air into over-the-road logistics, with strict requirements covering new batteries only, state-of-charge limits of 10% to 60%, full shipment documentation and hazmat-trained drivers. The service adds battery transport to Maersk Ground Freight’s existing network of full truckload, less-than-truckload, specialised LTL, cross-border and brokerage services, supported by more than 65 stations, seven regional hubs and coverage across more than 42,000 U.S. zip codes.

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 19-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — A.P. Moller – Maersk has launched a dedicated lithium-ion battery transportation solution within its North American ground freight network, expanding its role in the energy transition supply chain across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The new capability, offered through Maersk Ground Freight, is designed to support the safe, compliant and reliable over-the-road movement of Class 9 lithium-ion batteries. The solution targets growing demand from automotive, electric vehicle and advanced manufacturing customers that require specialised logistics infrastructure for battery transport.

Maersk said the launch positions the company in a fast-expanding segment of the North American logistics market. U.S. lithium-ion battery transportation spend is estimated at between $2.4 billion and $3.0 billion, based on Dataintelo’s 2026 analysis of the global lithium-ion battery logistics market and North America’s 27.3% regional share.

The company said electrification is one of the defining industrial shifts of the decade, but the batteries that support this transition require logistics systems built specifically for safety, compliance and scale. The new battery transportation solution extends Maersk’s dangerous goods expertise from ocean and air freight into over-the-road logistics.

Bob Livingston, U.S. Head of Maersk Ground Freight Operations, said the energy transition is not only about what powers a vehicle, but also about the supply chain that supports it. He said moving lithium batteries safely and at scale requires purpose-built logistics infrastructure, which Maersk has developed through the new ground freight solution.

The programme is built around strict eligibility and documentation requirements. It applies only to new batteries and does not accept damaged, defective, recalled, returned or waste units. For outbound shipments, the state of charge must be maintained between 10% and 60%.

Purpose-built for safety and compliance

The program is built around strict eligibility and documentation standards, including:

  • New batteries only — no damaged, defective, recalled, returned, or waste units accepted
  • State of Charge (SOC) maintained between 10%–60% for all outbound shipments
  • Full documentation required for every shipment: Safety Data Sheet (SDS), Dangerous Goods Declaration, UN 38.3 Test Summary, SOC declaration, and watt-hour rating
  • Hazmat-trained drivers across the network, with no DOT placarding or CDL hazmat endorsement required under U.S. DOT regulations
  • Cross-border capability across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with compliance protocols tailored to each jurisdiction

About Maersk

A.P. Moller – Maersk is an integrated logistics company working to connect and simplify its customers’ supply chains. As a global leader in logistics services, the company operates in more than 130 countries and employs around 100,000 people. Maersk is aiming to reach net zero GHG emissions by 2040 across the entire business with new technologies, new vessels, and reduced GHG emissions fuels*.

*Maersk defines “reduced GHG emissions fuels” as fuels with at least 65% reductions in GHG emissions on a lifecycle basis compared to fossil of 94 g CO2e/MJ.

Each shipment also requires full documentation, including a Safety Data Sheet, Dangerous Goods Declaration, UN 38.3 Test Summary, state-of-charge declaration and watt-hour rating. The network uses hazmat-trained drivers, while the service is structured so that DOT placarding or a CDL hazmat endorsement is not required under U.S. DOT regulations.

The solution also includes cross-border capability across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with compliance protocols tailored to each jurisdiction. This gives shippers a single logistics framework for battery transport across key North American manufacturing and distribution corridors.
