Evonik Refocuses Health Care Business While Continuing Advanced Lipid Production in Hanau

(IN BRIEF) Evonik is selling selected production assets for pharmaceutical ingredients at its Hanau site in Germany to the ProChem Group, with the transaction expected to close on 19 June 2026. The divestment supports Evonik Health Care’s strategy of streamlining its asset footprint and concentrating investment on core growth areas such as advanced oral and injectable drug delivery technologies, precision biosolutions, pharmaceutical lipids for mRNA and gene delivery, and advanced cell-culture ingredients. Evonik will continue operating its Hanau-based GMP facility for advanced pharmaceutical lipids used in drug delivery technologies, including RNA therapeutics, for clinical and small-scale commercial supply. The company has also consolidated its pharmaceutical-grade keto and amino acid portfolio under the REXIM brand at sites in Wuming and Ham after discontinuing keto acid production in Hanau at the end of 2025. For ProChem, the acquisition adds GMP-compliant production facilities, quality-assured processes and industrial infrastructure that will expand its contract manufacturing services for pharmaceutical customers.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 19-Jun-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Evonik is selling selected Hanau-based production assets for pharmaceutical ingredients to the ProChem Group as part of a broader effort to streamline its Health Care business and focus investment on core growth areas.

The transaction is expected to close on 19 June 2026. Through the acquisition, ProChem will take over GMP-compliant production facilities in Hanau, Germany, strengthening its manufacturing capabilities, expanding its technological expertise and broadening the services it can offer to pharmaceutical customers.

Evonik said the move supports the growth strategy of its Health Care business, which is concentrating resources on areas where the company sees the strongest long-term value. These include advanced oral and injectable drug delivery technologies, precision biosolutions, lipids for mRNA and gene delivery, and advanced cell-culture ingredients.

Guido Skudlarek, head of Evonik’s Health Care business line, said refining the company’s focus and aligning its asset base will help Evonik deliver more strongly in the areas where it creates the greatest value for customers.

Evonik’s Hanau site has historically supported the pharmaceutical industry with active pharmaceutical ingredients, intermediates and pharmaceutical lipids. As part of the Health Care business’s strategic realignment, Evonik discontinued keto acid production at Hanau at the end of 2025.

The company has consolidated its pharmaceutical-grade keto and amino acid portfolio under the REXIM brand at Evonik sites in Wuming and Ham. Thomas Hermann, head of the REXIM product line, said the move strengthens Evonik’s position in attractive markets and supports supply security through a broad portfolio across markets.

Evonik will continue operating its Hanau-based GMP facility for advanced pharmaceutical lipids. These lipids are used in drug delivery technologies, including RNA therapeutics, and the facility will continue supplying clinical and small-scale commercial quantities in line with Evonik’s focus on high-growth healthcare areas.

The asset sale also creates new industrial opportunities for ProChem at the Hanau site. Jörg Blumhoff, Chief Sales Officer at the ProChem Group, said the company is gaining modern facilities, quality-assured processes and strong industrial infrastructure. He said the acquisition will allow ProChem to significantly expand its service portfolio and offer more comprehensive, scalable and regulatory-compliant solutions to customers.

ProChem is a multi-site contract manufacturer with capabilities across chemical production and analytics. Its services include synthesis, distillation, extraction, drying, mixing, grinding, sieving, packaging and analytical testing. The company serves sectors including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food additives and specialty chemicals.

Evonik remains a partner to the pharmaceutical industry through a portfolio that includes functional excipients, drug delivery technologies and contract development and manufacturing services for oral and parenteral dosage forms. Its Health Care portfolio also includes CDMO capabilities for small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients, highly potent APIs and intermediates, as well as cell culture solutions.

Evonik, headquartered in Essen, Germany, operates in more than 100 countries. The company generated sales of €14.1 billion and adjusted EBITDA of €1.9 billion in 2025, supported by around 31,000 employees worldwide.

The asset transaction reflects Evonik’s continued effort to sharpen its healthcare portfolio while enabling ProChem to expand its pharmaceutical ingredients manufacturing footprint at the Hanau site.
