New Saab Camouflage System Targets Thermal and Multispectral Battlefield Detection Threats

(IN BRIEF) Saab has introduced the Barracuda Poncho, a lightweight personal camouflage system designed to protect soldiers from thermal, visual, and ultraviolet sensor detection across multiple operational environments. The wearable camouflage solution expands Saab’s Barracuda signature management portfolio and responds to growing battlefield threats posed by UAV-based surveillance and advanced multispectral reconnaissance systems. Saab says the reversible poncho supports both day and night operations while maintaining mobility and rapid deployment capabilities for soldiers operating in woodland, desert, and Arctic conditions.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 11-Mayn-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Saab has unveiled a new personal camouflage solution designed to help soldiers avoid detection from increasingly advanced battlefield surveillance technologies, particularly UAV-based reconnaissance systems and multispectral sensors.

The newly introduced Barracuda Poncho expands Saab’s Barracuda range of camouflage and signature management solutions, providing individual soldiers with portable protection against thermal and visual detection across a variety of operational environments.

According to Saab, the lightweight poncho is specifically designed to conceal personnel from thermal sensors and, in its Arctic configuration, ultraviolet detection systems, while still allowing soldiers to maintain mobility and operate quickly and quietly in the field.

Weighing slightly more than one kilogram, the Barracuda Poncho has been developed for rapid deployment and ease of use, enabling soldiers to wear and adjust the system efficiently during operations.

The camouflage system is intended for use across multiple terrains and environmental conditions, including woodland environments, rocky desert landscapes, and Arctic regions. Saab said the poncho incorporates a reversible configuration that supports both daytime and nighttime operations, with one side optimized for daylight conditions and the reverse side providing enhanced thermal protection during nighttime use.

Henning Robach said the development of the new poncho reflects changing battlefield conditions and the growing prevalence of UAV-based surveillance technologies. He noted that even brief exposure outside protected positions or vehicles can compromise missions when modern aerial reconnaissance systems are in operation.

Robach added that the Barracuda Poncho builds on positive operational feedback received from Saab’s broader Soldier System programme while focusing specifically on wearable multispectral protection solutions that maintain both mobility and concealment effectiveness.

The product highlights increasing military demand for advanced signature management technologies capable of reducing visibility not only in the visual spectrum but also across thermal, infrared, and ultraviolet detection systems now widely used in modern surveillance and targeting operations.

Saab said the Barracuda Poncho will be publicly displayed during Eurosatory 2026 at the company’s exhibition stand in Hall 6.

The launch reflects broader trends within the defense sector as armed forces adapt to rapidly evolving reconnaissance capabilities driven by drones, multispectral imaging systems, and advanced battlefield sensors that are reshaping operational concealment requirements for military personnel.
